What I Learned At A Music Store

This is one legitimate problem that pisses me off - it can be really hard in a music store to get the attention of a sales rep because their time is being wasted by 'customers' who just hang out there, with no intention of buying anything, but who like to ask questions and argue.

Otherwise, I don't really give a fuck about how they spend their money. People frequently make bad decisions about their cash, but that's not unique to guitar players.

I genuinely care about people. I've thrown thousands dollars away on crap and I attempt to steer people away from stupid impulse buys. Just because EVH plays one doesn't mean you need to own it. There's a whole mental illness that goes on with that shit and it makes me feel bad when I see it. Some people buy shit so they don't have to talk to their wives.

Pick your poison.

People spend tons of cash and hundreds of hours on cars, boats, ATVs, wine, whiskey, guns, gaming, gambling, etc.

None of that shit will make you happy. And some people try to fill a void with consumerism; that's capitalism, that's the way it is. But if your expectations are realistic and don't have a problem (ie, spending money that you don't have, addiction is alienating your family and friends, etc.), then it's mostly a non-problem.

Not everyone can be the most self-actualized person in their community, y'know?

That having been said, EVH-wannabes get what they deserve.

I'm not sensitive at all. I'm a big boy, if you met me you would know that. Frankly if you spoke about women if front of me like you did in that post, I would use my very well developed calves to kick you in the ass.

I'm pointing out its non of your business what people spend their money on or why. It's theirs to do with as they please. You don't get to decide what someone needs or doesn't need. If you don't like all the stomp boxes don't buy them. You don't get to make that choice for other people.

Your status as gear/record reviewer and guitar teacher doesn't give you the right to be a condescending jerk because in your Veiw someone it's good enough to own a piece of gear.

Feel free to continue to treat people poorly, just remember what goes around come around.

Wow.....and I am not in the middle of this.......someone write that down.

Sorry to the OP if you feel you should not sell stuff to folks who don't need it. Perhaps you should no longer fill in at the retail store, probably not for you.

Also sorry you made that comment about female guitar players....'twas pretty fucking ignorant, and you're gonna get kicked in the taint doing that.

Mmmmmkay.........can we all play nicely now?

Thanks, and have a nice day.

No, you're being a condescending know-it-all, which makes you a douche.

I'm not being condescending. I know what I know, and I know a lot. I just had a student here who wants to buy a big programmable pedal board. I told him think about the songs in his set list and what his music requires before going out buying a bunch of harmonizers, fuzzes, and delays.

I made him realize that his music requires none of that. Pardon me for being a fucking helper.

I think you are guys being sensitive little pussies. Between you and reverend taking everything personally and Flamencology not giving a shit what novices do with their money, you make quite a group.

That's all fine and dandy, but there's nothing wrong with giving someone advice before they make a stupid purchase. They're still going to do what they want to do but at least I tried.

You're between a rock and a hard place if you think too much about guitar shop retail ethics.

I'm all for helping make customers make good choices that suit their needs, but the customer is not your sole obligation.

There was nothing condescending about what I said and I didn't treat anyone poorly. You're making things up know. I know what I know and I help people to make wise decisions unlike you. Being experienced and having knowledge is not condescending. You went on with the butt hurt diatribe as if I was personally attacking you.

I give my honest opinion when my advice is solicited. Especially kids. I don't force anything. I try to help. I suppose if some kid was ready to blow through a credit card and piss of his parents you'd encourage him.

Maybe his music will develop to need that if he starts to use them. If someone told the Edge that he didn't need a delay pedal because his setlist didn't require it, U2 would be a different band. As long as the store isn't deliberately misleading people into buying certain junk items, shut the fuck up and get off your high horse. Go spend your money on rubber asses and wining and dining faded pornstars.

I made a few observations. I'm not on a mission from god to save people from the horrors of music retail. Most of the people I sold stuff to made great choices. You guys are blowing this way out of proportion now. Ultimately customers will get whatever they want and I won't ever stand in their way. I can still have an opinion about it.

Can't you just feel the love? I can...I feel the love...

Let's all sing...

The world is black, the world is white
Together we learn to read and write

...everybody join hands and join in...

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea
Joy to you and me

Thank you...I love you all...
