What guitar would you 16 year old self want?

I saw a similar thread on the gear page and I thought it would be fun to do here. It's simple... What guitar(s) were you gassing for at age 16?

And what are you gassing for now?

Me - age 16 - I was playing a use gamer centaura. I didn't realize how great of a guitar it was but I always dreamed of getting a fender American strat in sunburst with maple board.

Now - age 37 - pretty much anything but a strat. Hahaha. Not really gassing for much these days

What about you?

Ibanez RG750 - the real Japanese ones - in electric purple. I saved so hard and finally bought it, and it was way too much guitar for me at the time. I still have it, but it's broken down into all its component parts and I haven't gotten around to putting it back together.

probably the magenta ESP that Page Hamilton played at the time.

or Larry LaLonde's mod'd 1976 Fender Strat.

or maybe the 7-string that Ibanez distressed for Steve Vai in his "for the love of god" video...

nowadays? i just want to play better. i don't need any more gear.

At sixteen I gassed for a Black/white aria pro II ZZ Custom. Bought one when I was 22. Hated it after a week.

When I was 16:

Kramer XL 5. Pure Bad Ass. Still want one.

Now at 45:

Jamie West-Oram's (From The Fixx) Original 1980 Schecter Strat. I will never stop lusting over this guitar.

Suhr built him a very accurate replica about two years ago because he retired this one from road use due to wear and tear. The Suhr is gorgeous and most certainly a fantastic guitar that I would love to own, but it isn't and never will be the mojo dripping beast that is this Schecter.

I had a Les Paul copy. I took that sucker completely apart... I put a PAF bridge pickup in it and tossed the neck pup... Turned the toggle into a kill switch of sort and then, get this, sanded the sunburst finish off and repainted it yellow with black polka dots..... I think I was going for a Randy Rhodes meets EVH thing...

I actually ended up ordering a custom neck from them, and putting it on a warmoth body. It was a Hum/Single layout for years, but one of the later things I did was route a humbucker spot in the middle. again... why? I don't know. :embarrassed: And my old toothpaste logo Charvel. That was my second Charvel... the first one was the one that I exploded the floyd rose out of the face of it.

My 16 year0old self?

Fuck that kids, he was an idiot. I spent too much time trying to keep up with the Joneses learning hair metal and other flavor of the month shit instead of focusing on rock, blues, prog, reggae, and all the other music that he really loved. He also thought Floyds (well specific licensed versions) were the best thing ever and that all guitars should have them and 24 frets, ideally with maple boards. This tool didn't even think much about owning an acoustic! Do you know how much this twit LOVED acoustic guitar parts in tunes and folks like Neil Young, Donovan, and JT?

I'm glad to have moved beyond his myopic joiner lameness. I wish I still had as many active hair follicles though...lucky bastard.

At 16? A black Strat. I got one when I was 17 (well, it was a Fernandes, but to me it was the coolest guitar in the world).

Now? I have too many guitars. If anything, I should be getting rid of some, but I just can't do it.

I was older than 16, probably, but I saw an ad in Guitar Player of Rick Derringer playing a BC Rich Warlock. He had a rock star name, he looked like a rock star, and the Warlock was a perfect complement to the whole. Now, NO.

When I was 16 (in 1981), I played bass. I wanted a Rickenbacker 4001 because of Chris Squire (and because of Geddy):

Even though I didn't play guitar then, I still loved the Les Paul because of Jimmy Page:

When I was sixteen I wanted a Rickenbacker 325. Later that year The Byrd's hit and I wanted a Rickenbacker 12.

Now I want a D'Angelico New Yorker.

I feel like your 16-year-old self now at 35, minus the 24-fret part.

My younger self was first attracted to Teles and Robertson's copper dipped Strat from the first time I watched the Last Waltz. Oddly, I still don't have a proper Tele (modded MIJ '69 Thinline reissue and an ASAT Special), but I've got a killer Strat...unfortunately it's not copper dipped.

I should have bought one of the copper finished '52 Thinlines that they were selling about 20 years ago...when I had disposable income. Two birds with one stone there...

At 43 I like a more basic set-up and I'm not stupidly adverse to hardtails (although I still prefer trems, I just don't want anything other than locking tuners). When I was attempting to be a more acrobatic player the Floyd was seemingly indispensable. Now my trem use is generally more subtle, but even when I rarely go crazy my PRSes stay in tune and my Strat might just go slightly out until I tweak the string behind the nut.
