West African music on guitar is new focus, I think.

Nice vid and playing. Shouldn't be a stretch for you. Are tunings typically similar?

African music, and African interpretations of western music are a vastly untapped milieu.

I've been listening to a lot of the Ali & Toumani record "In the Heart of the Moon" for about a year now. I got there looking for other music like what I heard in the Bela Fleck album/documentary "Throw Down Your Heart".

I think that the challenge is mainly an intellectual one, in this particular instance. Having it in your head, big ears, etc. Only a matter of time.

I've been saying for a long time now that the synthesizing of African and Asian guitar styles are basically the best way to Western players to sound original, particularly soloists.

There is a really great and inexpensive app for iOS devices called GuitAfrica that introduces guitarists to various styles of the continent. I'd recommend it.

I had a parakeet named Poly the Rhythm.

Nobody ever got it :(

Ha.

I've used Steve Reich's 'Clapping Music' app in acting classes. It's great for developing an ear for polyrhythms, though for that specific purpose it's about group listening and awareness. Free, btw.

I traveled with this African drummer for a while and we jammed a lot, but everything was 100% feel.

I remember that GuitAfrica app, it definitely looked cool I should check some of this stuff out, but I don't have a smartphone, and just a cheap Fire tablet.

Though I'm horrible when it comes to anything resembling a guitar lesson  :embarrassed:

I'm listening to "Throw Down Your Heart" right now! Weeeeeeird...

This is really old and is an African trying to sound American, which doesn't sound like what you want, but I've really enjoyed SE Rogie

This is a pretty fun record.

Not sure of the quality of this vid. It was done much later, but this song is cool. He's basically trying to emulate Jimmy Rogers but still very much sounding like himself.
