WTF: This is why we can't have nice, shiny things.

I just read this in one of our product manuals and had to look up the meaning.

"This device is not intended for use in the direct field of view at visual display workplaces. To avoid incommoding reflexions at visual display workplaces this device must not be placed in the direct field of view."

Basically, it means that shiny things or things with flashing lights can be distracting to some people. Hide your sparkly shit.

It seems to be a common thing as the wording seems to be used in regulatory compliance documents for many products .

Will I get fined for jingling my keys?
Will laser pointers be outlawed?

Uh, ok.

So that old Compact Disc hanging from the rear view mirror in my '97 Corolla is probably no bueno?

What are you selling? Airport landing lights?

In this case, it is a networking device that is about the size of two decks of cards stacked together.
It has some LEDs on each of two Ethernet ports and two more LEDs that have "lightports" going to opposite sides of the case that make it look like there are four LEDs there.

However, I have seen the same statement made for WLAN access points.

Other than the "lights are distracting" bit, the only thing that makes sense (and it makes more sense than the distraction bit) is that flashing lights can sometimes trigger seizures - specifically in epileptics. I've never heard of flashing LEDs being a problem, though. It's usually more wild flashing of which you need to be careful.

I assume some legal department put that in there to avoid any liability claim from a bozo mounting the network device on the dashboard of their car, or on the overhead lamp of a surgical suite, or attached to the barrel of a M249 SAW pointed towards the user. Never underestimate how stupid people can be with a product, and make sure your butt is covered.

We should have a thread where we post funny/crazy safety warnings from our jobs. I have some real gems at my job.

 That's as good as the "don't put the trash bag over your head" labels.

So the warning is basically "set the damn box behind the computer so people don't have to watch it flash 8 hours a day," right? Why the fuck can't they just say that? Noooo, the had to bust out "incommoding reflexions." Who the fuck says "incommoding reflexions?" I'll tell you who. Sir Arthur fucking Conan Doyle. I ran across Moriarity saying to Holmes how "You have absolutely incommoded me." That was nineteen fucking hundred. The only thing "commode" is used for nowadays is to reference the shitter when ladies are nearby.

So I guess this is out?
