The white guitar phase 2

It will be purple and green by next week.

Close.

It seems the problems I was having were because of the shellac I had. My father in law gave me that bag and it was apparently old. Even the new coat I just put on was no good. The good news there is that stuff melted off with a little lacquer thinner. In twenty minutes I had bare wood.

I tried out some new techniques of the doghair on scrap and finally found one that gave me consistent patterns. Here we are.

This is bare wood with the white filler.
No shellac this time. Straight to a can of Watco lacquer.

EG - please tell me, in the final iteration of this guitar, that fantastic, wonderful, beautiful wood grain will show.

Please make it so!

I started it late last night. So far so good. The filler stayed in place and no clouding. I think I finally figured out the doghair. The trick is to remove a lot more of the filler than you think you need to. The clear coat tends to blur it and make it haze. Less is more.

Thanks. Knowing that my clear coat could easily melt my filler, I went very very very very light on the first couple of passes and I still got a little clouding in a few spots from the filler melting. It's not too bad and in inconspicuous places so I think I'll leave it. Likely nobody but I would notice anyway unless it was pointed out.

Got a couple more coats on and it's still looking good.

Ok. I think it's finished. I couldn't make the doghair work. There were just too many fuckups I couldn't conceal; most notably my side dot fiasco.
So, here it is, new side dots and all.

The new side dots are made from epoxy with black dye in them. This time I made a jig to make certain they were aligned properly.

I finished spraying a week ago. The paint is hard but, honestly, I don't feel like polishing that crap right now. So I'm gonna let it sit as is for a while before I do that.

Yup. White again.
After the yellow paint fail, I was working with what I had on hand and that was a couple cans of white and a couple cans of clear so that's what it is.
