Funkasaurus Rex
This is long overdue. There is so much Prince content from his entire career and far-too-brief life, but I figured if someone wanted to get a quick sampling of his genius that there should be a collection of some of his best moments.
I'll start it off with a few of my favorites.
From the Sign O' the Times era... with the incomparable Shelia E.
Here's a quick little mashup with him on the acoustic guitar...
From a show with multiple encores, He even grabs a bass to lay down some funky grooves.
Prince wrote so many songs for other artists (Chaka Khan, the Bangles, Stevie Nicks, Sinead O'Connor, Patti Labelle, Alicia Keys) that people sometimes forget that some of his spin-off bands were additional outlets for him to write in different styles and for different voices. Even in the Purple Rain movie, The Time are portrayed as a rival band when Prince actually wrote and recorded all of instruments for that album and brought in a buddy of his, Morris Day, to be the front man. The climax of the movie has The Kid performing a song written by his bandmates Wendy & Lisa, while in reality Prince actually wrote the song.
Prince was most well known for his hits during the era with the Revolution band... but he formed the New Power Generation so he had the band members necessary to explore more jazz, funk, R&B, and hip-hop. Some of these extended jam sessions are so notorious that one such event was an entire album unto itself. During the "One Night Alone" tour they recorded "One Night Alone" they did "The After Show: It Ain't Over". This is the way I picture Prince in the afterlife.... just endlessly jamming with Hendrix and many other greats....
