Already told the first harmonica player of the night to go pound sand.

Unreal.

The guys are ready early. No harp players to be seen so far.

I was paid in beer. Does this mean I'm officially a professional musician now?

Fun time. No bottles hurled and I was told I can come back. Not bad.

Interesting bar gig

Place is being renovated, so there's no stage, we just set up on the floor. Lots of intoxicated women being silly while dancing (humping the floor, showing "milkers" to use a George Costanza term:grin:- I missed that one- I was too busy trying not to have my brain explode in a big mess all over the stage as a result of playing keys w/left hand bass.

Before we play our first set, we are approached by an older woman whos brother wants to sing a song. We just figured that it was another crappy local jammer/drunk. She was frustrated that she was told no. She was very insistant though so I talked to her to get to the bottom of the situation. \

It turned out that the guy really didn't care if he sang a song or not, but his sister was very very insistant the he did. I got the feeling that the guy went through this situation many times w/her:facepalm: The guy ended up being http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brent_Carver! He was very polite, if also very drunk. Sang A Cappella- I heard this extraordinary voice. Holy crap I thought- imajine this guys singing when he's stone sober & prepared.

I think his gift was a bit lost on the local crowd. Most didn't know or care who he was, & couldn't see behind what a few drinks will do to anyone- even the amazingly talented.

After talking for a bit w/ BKs sister- it turns out that the Carver family has a lot of local history (Cranbrook B.C.). They go way back in the community. She told me of a time when the bar was segregated-women on one side & men on the other.

We're playing there tonight again- I wonder who will show up this time?:lol:

Got a gig coming up next weekend with the new band (yes, I joined yet another band, silly me) - support gig for a well known touring band over here.
Why not start by doing the cool gigs first.
There are plans that include both video and pics for that gig. :embarrassed:

Tonight tonight tonight. Last of the hard rock/80s metal gigs in it's current incarnation. Hopefully we can find someone to sing by the next gig (June lol).

Opening for Pop Evil tonight :) My 28th show with FFR, 1st show I've ever day tripped. 2nd show of the year btw, the 1st was in PA at the beginning of this month - vids have popped up from that one, but they're ALL cymbals and such. Plus it was one of those with no significant lighting, though the sound system was pretty cool :)

I think it's time to get a pic of my bass rig to post here

Our gig Friday night was decent. The club itself is rather strange. It is on two floors. The main floor is the typical bar/pool hall. The band plays in a different room on the second floor totally separated from the main bar section. You have to go to the back of the bar and up a set of stairs to get to the area where the band plays - and even then it is the back 2/3 of that room. The front 1/3 is a separate bar/pool table room. Why they even want bands is beyond me. They don't pay the band at all (probably explains the set up) but we get 100% of the cover charge. So we ended up with $15.00 each. At least there was a $70.00 bar tab for the band so I did get a couple of microbrews out of it as well. That is the least amount of money for a show that paid I have ever been paid.

The show itself went decently well. The stage itself was not the sturdiest ever and the drummer was bouncing around most of the night having to aim for his drums. Our bass player had a new rig that sounded really nice. I had one trainwreck when the other guitar player threw a solo at me on a song I normally do not solo on. I was not even sure what key it was in since I was not expecting anything so I slid around the key until I finally found it. I hate it when I do that...

as a "large" person I'm always leery of stages like that. I've fallen through a few in my time :embarrassed:

Tonight's show was decent. NOT a fan of shows at which 4 or more bands are playing. Tonight? FIVE. And something about the way the house's PA was set up combined with the time crunch meant we couldn't use our monitor board without it turning into a massive PITA. So... no in-ears OR wedges. Not optimal. lol
Those on vocals did get to run in-ears, but all they had in their ears were their voices. AMAZING that Ryan still rocked so thoroughly only hearing what of his guitar was picked up by his vocal mic. Most impressive! Also, Erin was sick with a fever, and still did a stellar job tonight.
Also, one of the big forces behind FFR was hearing them for the first time since my joining and I hated that I had to be so far out of my comfort zone for that first impression.
Regardless, all went well though there was a surprisingly low turnout. Is it wrong that when I see a national act like Pop Evil pull up in a Provost bus, I expect them to have at least mediocre draw? We had half the crowd they did... and we started at 7:45...
Some good friends I haven't seen in a while came to the show (including the drummer from the band I left to join FFR), so that was awesome! And from what I could tell, everyone had a good time :)

Next gig: NACA Nationals in Charlotte, NC this weekend!!! w00t!!

Nice, are you the permeant bassist now?

Yup! I became official at the very end of August. My bio JUST got put up on the band's page along with a temp new group shot (old group shot still on the main page though. Soon...)

Well that's not so cool. If nothing else, key=found :thu: and ya made it through :)
