The more I pick from the wrist the closer to the sound I want I get.

I'm getting closer to the way I want to play now but it's taken a whole lot of reprogramming. This video shows a little of what I'm talking about...

I don't want to play like this necessarily but I'd like to have this kind of control.

Yup, me too. The big breakthrough (I think I've mentioned this once or twice :embarrassed:) was picking using index finger/thumb movement only..what Pebber Brown calls "sarod picking". That just somehow "unlocked" my wrist. Before that, people would say to me "pick from the wrist" and I'd say "How??"..'cos I just couldn't. As soon as I sped up, my arm started moving and it hurt. I thought there was something wrong with my wrist. :embarrassed:

At the moment, I think Guthrie might be my biggest influence :)

It is so hard to retrain muscles that have worked a certain way for decades. I started my current "quest" almost two years ago and I'm just starting to be happy with the results.

Well, for the last two days, I've been noodling for hours on my new-to-me Ibby... I played from 1985 to 2010 on one electric, which has a hard tail bridge, and the knobs are well behind the bridge... So, right off the bat, as always when I've borrowed a guitar like this, I found myself throwing it sharp when resting on the bridge, and running into the volume knob... However, about 10 minutes into it, I managed to stop resting my hand on the bridge, thus no longer going out of tune... What I noticed after keeping my hand off the bridge was that I am no longer hitting the volume knob... The smoothness and ease of my picking has really improved in just the last couple days, I've noticed... I guess this configuration has taken away a crutch that I got used to over the years, but have discovered I don't need... I'm getting better!! :) I also continue to watch all the Guthrie Govan vids I can, and listen to his band's album a few times a week...
