I haven't used the concept of a donut, but the tube-within-a-tube idea is one I bring up in most of my classes, to emphasize that the lumen of your gut is actually the 'outside' of you, not the 'inside' (and therefore filthy with microbes)

I assume they're talking about a jelly or cream filled one with holes at either end. :shrug: It's not really weird anyway. *spits*

They're just talking about a regular toroidal donut. the GI tract is the hole in the donut; it's "outside" the donut(body). the cake part that's the "inside" of the donut is the inside (ie tissue, etc) of the body.
