it's the old Holden Commodore platform, which was the Pontiac G8 over here. Is that what the new Caprice is based on?

The G8 was the last gen (VE) Commodore, the SS is the current gen (VF). The Caprice PPV is a different model http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden_WM_Caprice

Production on the SS is going to be fairly limited in comparison so I don't think there's any concern there.

Oh, and it is ugly. REALLY ugly. A real non-factor as I see it.

The only thing this is missing is fake bullet hole stickers down the sides.
