The Guilty Gourmet™ Reviews: Wendy's new ' Dave's Hot 'n Juicy Cheeseburger'...

Yes folks, after a nearly successful gastro-bypass surgery and getting the old arteries drilled out the Guilty Gourmet™ is back on the case, investigating all the epicurean creativeness of the American fast food machine.

Today we get back to basics. Wendy's has recently introduced a burger line called 'Dave's Hot and Juicy Burgers'. Not only that, but they mailed a bunch of buy-one-get-one-free coupons to the Guilty Gourmet™ at his humble abode. So today we consumed not one, but two of the new offerings. The specific burger we consumed in duplicate today was the 'Dave's Hot and Juicy Quarter Pound Single'. According to the propaganda these burgers are made with 100% fresh (never frozen) North American Beef. So those of you worried about the Chinese taking over the good ole USA - Wendy's has your back. No Chinese beef here. Guatemalan Beef?? Could be.....but not Chinese.

Anyway, these burgers are also made with premium ingredients like tomato slices, red onion slices, pickles, iceberg lettuce, American cheese. If those are the premium ingredients, I really do not want to know what is on the other burgers because they sound rather ordinary to me. The burger itself is a quarter pound of beef and is thicker. Same weight - just thicker - and square. Square burgers are important at Wendy's. Thicker square burgers. And the single burger hits the cash register at a whopping $4.09 each. For a quarter pound burger. With iceberg lettuce. Premium iceberg lettuce. And a premium tomato slice.

That struck the Guilty Gourmet™ as a bit on the extreme side pricing wise. But it is probably because it is a MIA burger. Their Indonesian import burgers are probably still in the $2.00 region for those of us who cannot afford MIA all the time.

So - how did it taste you ask? Well, actually not bad at all. A good solid fast food burger. But definitely not a $4.00 burger. I guess if you label the toppings as premium you can jack the price up a good 25%. So, will I be back for a second helping? Or rather a third since I ate two of the suckers for lunch today. Not likely. If you are going to charge me $4.00 for a fast food burger I expect something a bit more than this. Good - but not worth the extra for what you get.

And a thicker patty. I think that's it, though. Kind of a lot of hype, but I guess that's the fast food business.

It's been awhile since I've gone to Wendy's. That review isn't changing my mind.

I had noticed that they'd gone to red onions for their burgers... maybe because they have a stronger taste so they can therefore slice them even thinner and use less? Regardless, I'm not a fan of raw red onions.

On the other hand, their french fry improvements (thicker cut, sea salt) turned out well. Wendy's used to have the worst fries in the fast food business.
