The Folk Roots of Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead - Now Complete!

Folk or old time?

Old time and bluegrass both came from folk which is why you’ll see a lot of the same tunes. There are some that make the case that grass came from old time, but the folks I know that play it, tend to be purist and see them as two separate styles.

Genre Wars: The Sequel

I think one of the most appealing things about Garcia’s approach to music was how open he was. He never allowed himself to be limited by constructs like genre even when operating in more traditional formats.

I think you’re title is a good one. Folk is the well that @Pine Apple Slim referenced earlier in the thread.

Folk is a term encompassing several meanings which only makes sense in context.
It its most broad sense its not a genre, but a descriptive term that encompasses any music that springs organically from a culture without the aid of formal structures. In its most narrow definition, it is a pop genre that arouse out of the labor movement of the early 20th century.
Old Time is a modern genre label used to describe current interpretations of the informal dance music of Appalachia.
Bluegrass is a modern genre inspired from the music of Bill Monroe. Specifically the 1949 band that included Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt.

That’s because Jerry took LSD.

Yes, the broader definition of folk includes the non-classical music of any culture, including Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Scotland, etc. in fact it’s British, Irish, and Scottish (Celtic) folk music and ballads that’s thought to be a precursor to Appalachian music. Along with African influences. It’s all folk. But I tend to think of Woody and Pete Seeger in a narrower definition (although Seeger played all kinds of styles).
