The Doors hate. Explain it to me.

I kind of don't get it.

I'm not a Doors FAN.... in fact I've never been one at any point. I know Morrison could seem like an irritating douche. And they had some weak moments. But...

I mean, they had kind of an interesting sound- sort of this weird ominous gothic rumble. Some interesting stuff going on.

But they seem to get this SUPER HATE on musician boards in particular and it's a bit confusing to me. How is Morrison worse than all the other drugged-out rock and roll assholes of the era? Weren't they kind of interesting? Didn't they have some pretty good songs?

I don't know, the hate seems strong with this one. Can anyone enlighten?

I'm a fan, but I can see how Jim Morrison could get on people's nerves.

I think of them as the 60's version of The Smiths.

I can't explain it beyond this. When I hear a Door's song I can't change the station fast enough. It's just something about his voice and that fucking keyboard. Did I mention I hate the keyboard? I don't fault others for liking them, it's just not my thing.

I've always kinda thought the Jim Morrison as a poet thing was a joke. I'm not a fan of him, really, but I like the doors. I agree, the hate is weird.

I can get hating a farfisa, but a Vox Organ and a Bass Rhodes? SACRILEGE!

I like the Doors. I don't tend to care much about the personality of celebrities or musicians. I'm pretty sure John Mayer is an insufferable asshole but he writes music I like so I don't really care. I don't know why we have this idea that if a famous person is an asshole that you can't like their work. I work with some complete assholes that are pretty good nurses. What's the difference? We like our celebrities to be Mother Theresa-ish, gracious, humble, kind, etc. Most people in the real world aren't like that so what difference does it make if a lot of people know their name? idn_smilie

Let me add this. I don't "hate" them, I dislike their music. Hate implies I want to kill them or burn down their house or something equally vile. I don't think not liking their music qualifies as hate. That word is really over and misused.

I hate the saxophone.

Just sayin

Talk about weird, I love The Smiths and can't stand Morrissey.

I like the Smiths but am not much of a post-Smiths Moz fan. And in recent years Morrissey's vocals with the Smiths have started to bother me a bit. So there ya go.

I think we are taking about different things. I don't really know much about him personally. I dislike his on stage persona. So self important and prancing around the stage doing those goofy poses. The whole I'm a tortured artist and look at how sad I am, blah, blah, blah. To me he's a dude with a over developed ego trying really hard to get laid.

I use it because it's appropriate to describe the attitude I've encountered from numerous dudes (mainly on music-related forums) towards their music. It's not just, "I change the station"; it's like kind of a visceral hatey reaction. I seek only to understand.

Yeah, but do we want to start a tally of dudes in the 60s and 70s who were self-important and "pranced around the stage doing those goofy poses"? I mean lets face it, Jimbo has a lot of company.

I wasn't really referring to you. It's a general pet peeve of mine. I hate this, I hate that, don't be a hater, they're hating on me. It's like ice picks in my ears. It's as bad as "back in the day."
