Tenor guitars? (Now with NTGD!)

My band is reconfiguring after a COVID hiatus, and we're bringing in an additional multi instrumentalist/singer who will be sometimes sharing guitar duties with me. I've long been interested in playing a tenor guitar, but it wouldn't have filled in the middle between the double bass and mandolin/PSG I'm playing with. Now that it's an option, I'm doing some shopping. Any opinions or warnings out there? I'm looking for A/E, out else I'm paying someone to electrify it (I don't think a sound hole pick up will fit, but I'm open to correction on that).

I’ve played a few different things from the Gretsch folky line. Checked to see if they have a tenor guitar but didn’t see one.

I’ve played a few newer martins that were ok. One of my friends has a really old Martin that’s pretty rad. I’ve played a few other vintage ones over the years that were real hit and miss. This is something I’d be wary about buying without trying first.

I’ve seen arch tops that looked like they might be fun to play but never really tried one. They look cool, but would probably be pretty quite. If your putting a pup on it or getting one with you could probably get away with it.

Recording King has a tenor guitar for $189. https://reverb.com/p/recording-king...-Shop_unpaid&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google

Gold Tone also has a tenor guitar in the $369 range. https://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gold-tone-tg-10-tenor-acoustic-guitar/j25546000001000?cntry=US&cur=USD&utm_content=J25546000001000--Gold Tone TG-10 Tenor Acoustic Guitar Natural

Both are decent low-price acoustic brands. I have played several Gold Toe instrunets and have been happy with them.

Lace makes this pickup that easily fit a 1960s parlor guitar and should fit either of those tenors. I have one for the old Harmony.

I am not seeing any A/E tenor guitars listed.

If I can just stick the sound-hole pickup I've got sitting around in it, I'll start with one of the cheapo ones to get a feel for it. If I need to pay someone to put a decent piezo system into an acoustic model, I'm looking at the pricier models (still under $1K) so I can be one-and-done.

Electrics are off the table for the moment, as I am currently not carting an amp into gigs and would like to keep it that way.

Well, it's all but settled. Of the two models I can actually get my hands on, the recording king is the one that my aftermarket sound hole pickup fits into. If I love it, I can upgrade to a better guitar, transfer the case and pickup, and sell the recording king at maybe a $100 loss. I'll definitely get $100 worth of information, gigs, and fun out of it. I've just got to find the time to make a pilgrimage to elderly.

Here's me playing the Recording King Tenor Guitar, running through a song I've just learned the chords to on guitar. I know my cowboy chords on mandolin, which is tuned in the same intervals, but I had to transpose them to the tenor's CGDA tuning. So there's my excuses for my performance.

On to the guitar--I can tell it's a cheap instrument (<$200, barely more than the case I bought for it), but the fact that I bought it at Elderly and got their expert set-up just about fixes any of the cheapness. Action is perfect, frets are perfect, intonation is perfect so far. I've worked my way up the neck a little, and have done the harmonic-vs.-fretted test, and it's in great playing shape. The neck and bridge both look like unfinished walnut, so I might rub some oil on them. My Fishman soundhole humbucker fits nicely, but I've got to see how it sounds. I will probably wait out the 30-day return policy before I drill out the end peg to install the pickup, as well as adding an upper strap button.

While I was at Elderly, I played the two other tenor guitars they had on display, both Blueridges. One was in "Chicago" tuning (basically like a ukulele) and the other was tuned CGDA. It sounded a little warmer, but not 5 times better, which was the price difference.

Time will tell, but if this gels with the overall band sound, I'm going to play this little fucker down to kindling. By then, either the world will have caught on, and I'll have more choices, or I'll get a higher-end model and have a proper pickup installed.

Ani DiFranco has quite a few songs on tenor guitar... I know she has a cool old Gibson archtop one. HNTGD!

Eleanor Whitmore of The Mastersons/Steve Earle and the Dukes plays an acoustic tenor, as well as a semi-hollow body electric.

My son is newly obsessed with Johnny B Goode (and "squeals") after seeing Back to the Future, so he's been playing it a lot. I showed him how to hit a harmonic, which is closer enough to feedback for him, and he snapped the high string at the bridge. I'm going to replace the string, but if it's just a sharp but in the bridge I'll bring it back.
