... and that's why you're not doing yourself any favors eating a burger grilled over a fire rather than something from a fast food joint." - coworker

Well, I don't really care for smoked meat, anyways, but there is nothing wrong with a gas grill... Still, if he thinks the steroid and hormone filled shit burgers in a fast food joint are better for you, he is a facepalm fool...

scary because it's probably true...

What do you mean probably? I've seen the plans!

smoke is indeed carcinogenic. that said, fast food has so much shit in it, that it causes completely different kinds of cancer.

It is exceedingly well documented that burning organic material, any biological material from tobacco to meat, creates carcinogenic compounds. When you cook over an open fire and char the surface of meat, you create carcinogens. The risk, however, is relatively minor for charred meats compared to inhaling burning organic material 200 times a day like in smoking, but it does exist. I suspect one would have to eat only grilled meat, and charred to a crisp, daily for decades to see an increased incidence in cancer. FWIW - I love me a grilled burger/steak or whatever, and I certainly do not watch the level of charred/grilled meat I consume.

It's also the fat drippings that scorch and burn giving off dioxin. I'm guessing that's why most new grills don't have lava rock anymore.

This.

Have you read this? Would love to hear some of your thoughts on it.

PS - I have read it, and very much enjoyed it, but my science background is weak, beyond what physics I've had to learn for applications in the theatre... haven't been able to get the Future Real Dr. Flamencology to read it yet, either.

Of the many things in this world that could kill me off, charred burger is not one that I'm worried about.

I had a charcoal grilled burger on Sunday. I also had a half a pack of cigarettes on Saturday.

Guess which one I'm more worried about? :embarrassed:
