Scientific Proof that Buying Guitars Makes You Happy

Deep Eddy

Argle Bargle or Foofaraw?
Check out this article in the NY Times. Next time I want to buy another guitar, I can point to this and tell the Mrs. that another guitar is scientifically guaranteed to make me happy (unlike that new end table) and increase my interactions with others. Huzzah for science!

"Thomas DeLeire, an associate professor of public affairs, population, health and economics at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, recently published research examining nine major categories of consumption. He discovered that the only category to be positively related to happiness was leisure: vacations, entertainment, sports and equipment like golf clubs and fishing poles."

the case for GAS:

On the bright side, the practices that consumers have adopted in response to the economic crisis ultimately could — as a raft of new research suggests — make them happier. New studies of consumption and happiness show, for instance, that people are happier when they spend money on experiences instead of material objects, when they relish what they plan to buy long before they buy it, and when they stop trying to outdo the Joneses.

Wow! My depression problems must be worse than I thought. I have about 14 guitars right now.

That wouldn't work in my case.... all it does is justify how much money my wife and I spend travelling (like this past weekend. :embarrassed: )

I've been GASing for a Les Paul (a Std or 58 RI) for ages now, but I could never justify it to myself. This may be the thing I need to finally convince myself. A LP is far cheaper than therapy and anti-depressants, right?

So staring at tits makes you live longer, and buying guitars makes you happy.

Sounds like a winning combination.

The associate professor seems to say that spending on leisure things where there was some sort of experience involved gave more satisfaction, compared to ordinary status things? OK, one can always use a guitar for making music, but pure collectors seems not to fit?

Spending money on things you like to do increases happiness.....hope they didn't have to spend much on that study to figure that one out!rotflmao
