He was a pop hack, but he was hugely talented. The legend goes that he and Carole King, when they were in high school, would play a game where one would mash a random bunch of notes on one piano, and the other could match it by ear on a neighboring piano.

And the month-by-month rhyme scheme of Calendar Girl is brilliant.

Ha! His voice in that song is higher than Karen Carpenter, and if you heard them both on the radio it'd be pretty easy to make that mix-up.
