There's a gaping hole, an astronomical void, in the baseball Hall of Fame where he belongs, and I got to say as much to him at the Taj Mahal casino years ago when I was able to steal a minute of his time...
It's seems petty that the MLB held that grudge for so long. Pete should have seen himself be inducted. He damn well better get in on first nomination. When you look at what pro athletes are doing, and in many cases getting away with, now, what Pete did was minor. He never bet on a team he was coaching. Nowadays athletes do ads for gambling apps. The Hall of Fame awaits now that his lifetime band is over
Agreed, but that was what...1989? It was petty to hold onto that decision for 35+ years and not revisit the permanent ban. Would it have been so terrible to let him in the HOF in the 2020s? I think the MLB's point had been made by then.At the time it wasn't so petty. Gambling was a HUGE no no in Baseball for a long time. When under investigation about the allegations, Rose lied to the Commissioner about his involvement. When it was found out Rose lied, he got the harshest penalty they could give him.
He was also allegedly a total dickhead to almost everyone he ever met - which I think has been instrumental in ensuring that the ban was never lifted.
