Robbie Coltrane, actor who played the beloved Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, dies at 72

Venerable Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, best known as the dragon-loving half-giant Hagrid from the Harry Potter film franchise, died on Friday, his managers said.
He was 72.
A representative with the actor's agency, William Morris Endeavor, confirmed his passing to NBC News, saying Coltrane had been ill and wasn't active recently.
His cause of death wasn't immediately disclosed.

RIP big man.

In Scotland, and the UK generally, he was famous and much loved long before Harry Potter. In fact when he was cast as Hagrid the reaction was 'well, of course'. I don't know if JKR wrote the character with him in mind but it had to be at least sub-conciously in there.

Same here in Scandinavia as well. Was well aware of him way before the Potter stuff. Loved watching Cracker back in the 90s.
I think I read somwhere that JKR insisted he play that part once they were starting to cast for the movies.
