Yeah, there are a lot that got left off. I thought the same thing about Daltry, since Pete is on there. :shrug:

OK, let's define songwriting. There's the chord progressions, vocal melody, and lyrics as a start. Then all of the arrangement and lead parts after that. Don F wrote the chord progressions, and not the vocal melody or lyrics. When people are singing their favorite song in the shower, they're only singing the vocal melody and lyrics. So Felder wrote the part of the song no one sings.

and he wrote all of the guitar for the second half of the song, which isn't just a bunch of random blues riffs. they're just as specific as any vocals, and without that ending, it would be a pretty boring song.
"you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave".....END. pretty big cliff hanger.

that chord progression DRIVES the melody, otherwise it would have ended up just being another 'new kid in town' or 'lying eyes' (were it up to Frey). Felder's part of that song IS what creates the tension, not the vocal melody.
and btw, Joe's only part in that song was a suggestion to move one section of the dual lead ahead of another section. that's it.

Frey didn't go to Felder and say "here's some lyrics i wrote, write some chords for it." Felder wrote the music first and Frey ADDED the lyrics.
 
What's interesting is Felder posted something nice in the wake of Frey's death. I thought that was pretty decent of him especially given his exit from that band, not entirely his idea.

Henley was the primary writer of the lyrics; Frey contributed some.

But the song is one of those near-perfect marriages of evocative music and poetry.

ok....Henley, then. whichever. my point is that the music came first and the lyrics had to fit the timing of the music, rather than the other way round.

Not necessarily. I have written a ton of songs, just the music and then had to alter the music to fit the timing of the lyrics that the singer came up with. Only those 3 know who did what with the song. I've read before that Felder came up with intro part then he and Glenn finished it together with Don adding the words. To be totally honest, they were all so probably coked up, they have no idea who wrote what :grin:
 
I'm loopy on cold medicine at the moment, so my facts might be off here. I believe it is on the public record that Felder was credited as a writer on Hotel Cali, and that Henley/Frey later tried to get him removed. That's a quantifiably douchebag move, and suspicious to boot.
 
Neither Henley nor Frey came off as the warmest of gentlemen on that Eagles documentary (just saw the last half hour or so again the other night). But the fact remains that they are responsible for a shit-ton of great music.
RIP Glenn Frey.
