Reverb selling - won't be doing that again

So, I listed a $900 guitar for $600. User starts bidding on it Friday for $450. I thought I'd be nice, let him think about it, and countered at $575.

He waited two days, then countered for $525. F that, I think, and wind up selling it locally (in fact, to a friend who wound up giving me $650 for it because he saw the hang tag in the case and said 'let me pitch in the extra').

I log on to Reverb, and see Mr. Lowball has met the price of $575. I send him an immediate and full refund, telling him it sold locally.

He then sends me a nastygram, saying "I've been trying to buy that off you for days! I'm going to leave you the worst possible feedback!" Which, frankly, I don't care about as I feel I've learned my lesson about THAT particular method of selling.

Did I miss anything here? Should I forward the history to Reverb staff, assuming they a) have someone who is not a robot; and b) give a crap?

His reaction was shitty. But you should have removed the listing as soon as you made the local sale. It takes about a minute to pull out your phone and delete a listing.

I sold it Monday night and logged in this AM ... I hear you. I'm not wanting to poo-fling, but geez, guy, you weren't "trying to buy it," you were "trying to have me sell it to you at a ridiculously low price."

I've had about 8-10 great CL transactions, and only one nutcase, so I think I'll head back in that direction. I'm so not in the mood for sorehead kooks these days.

It's kinda your responsibility to stay on top of that. If you checked the sale status before your friend came by, and it was literally a matter of minutes, then it's not your fault. Otherwise it's kind of rude. Still, the dude is being a dick about it. What does your Reverb account rules say about that? i would definitely let reverb know.

No, I would never have left it hanging. He sent the $525 offer Monday AM, and I sold to my friend Monday evening. I logged in again Tuesday AM and refunded him - got the pissy-gram this evening.

If I was supposed to be checking multiple times a day, I did indeed goof. Other than that, I had one person making lowball offers and had put in on a 24 hour cycle. Also was unaware that I somehow 'owed' the info that I was attempting to sell it locally.

How long between when he accepted your counter and his refund? If it was with in 12 hrs I suspect reverb is going to tell him that's life and might remind you to be a little more prompt with your follow up.

FWIW, I make a point of using the app when I'm selling so I can pretty quickly respond to questions, offers or zap listings as needed and get notifications. It's surprising how many buyers think everyone on reverb is running a music shop and is available 24/7. That said, I've had no issues with the exception for some obnoxious low ballers but that's no big deal. OTOH I've sold stuff for much more than I'd get on CL and with no in-person contact w/ greasy people.

I've bought and sold a fair amount on Reverb. You have to be responsible as a seller. I pull the listing whenever I've got a potential local sale on the line to prevent issues like this. It takes literal seconds to unlist and relist. I probably would have avoided setting up a local sale until after the open offer expired on Reverb. Just to avoid confusion/anger. But knowing there was an open offer, I def would have pulled the listing ASAP when I thought I might sell offline.

I've only ever encountered one nightmare sale on Reverb...as a buyer...caused by UPS. The seller was awesome and supportive the entire time. Even the Reverb/CME support team is super helpful.

Nothing but nice things to say about my experiences with Reverb. The overall community of buyers and sellers--several of whom I've met during in person transactions--is a cut above.

I think I have done my fair share of Reverb buying and selling. Your first mistake was countering his stupidly low offer. When I get those, I just decline. Those people aren't worth your time and you found that out. Whenever you have an offer in the hands of the buyer, you need to end the listing the second you get a local buyer. That being said, the guy did respond like a dick but it was easy to tell by his shitty lowball initial offer which goes back to first point

You know, fuck that guy. Oooooo, bad feedback. If you run a business out of the price inflated Reverb Factory you're fucked. If not, tell the guy to munch these nuts and to have a nice fucking day.

Well, I have great respect for the folks here so I will say I have learned my lesson. I am chagrined and embarrassed to not realize how things are; I guess Reverb is not the right spot for me. I felt that checking daily is/was enough; I hear it: nope.

I suppose part of this is my aversion to the idea of having the app / constantly checking. That freaks me out .... so: no internet sales, I suppose.

(it's a joke, I see who you were responding to ...)

I really hate when I'm an asshole and am not even cognizant of having made the choice to be an asshole.

I've found reverb CS folks are quite reasonable. It might be worth explaining your case, being humble about it, and asking if they'll remove the negative feedback since the transaction never actually happened? Just a thought.

You don't have to check it daily. The issue for you was there was an offer sitting with the buyer. When you are in that position, you are at their mercy so to speak. That is why I generally don't counter, then I am not stuck waiting on them. They low ball me, I decline. They shoot me an offer I won't take, I decline. That makes them submit a new offer and the ball stays in my court, I am in control. Sure I may lose a sale or 2 because I don't counter, but its not worth the headache to me. But yes, if you counter and are waiting for them, you need to at least check your email to see if they accepted, you should get one when they do, then you know it's sold and you don't sell it out from under them.
