I like Setzer but dont include him since he was doing that retro thing since the 80s but these bands were not so good. cherry poppin daddies, etc. they made me want to take a shish kebab skewer, get it red hot in some kind of furnace, and then slide it into my pecker hole. how about you, did you like that late 90s swing revival? sound off in the comments below!

I enjoyed BBVD, even saw them live once. They're still around and touring. My daughter loves them and has seen them multiple time.

Squirrel Nut Zippers was another band with that 40s swing vibe, but I didn't like them as much for some reason.

If you like the Texas Swing thing (à la Bob Wills), check out Asleep at the Wheel. They've been around forever, and are still out there keeping that music alive. Ray Benson even has a weekly show called Ray's Roadhouse. Check it out. :thu:

Most of that stuff sucked. They were writing pop songs and trying to make them work as swing jazz arrangements. Setzer was coming from a very different place; he learned music from jazz teachers so he was able to actually write great jazz for a big band.

I ran into a buddy from high school at a party in the 90's. He was going on and on about how great Big Bad Voodoo Daddy are live. He mentioned an upcoming show. I did lots of head nodding while he was trying to sell this band. So much so, that everyone within ear and eyeshot had to be convinced that I was absolutely going to check this band out for myself. I never did.

I actually played in a swing band just at the time this was kicking off but it imploded just in time. We mostly did actual Sinatra and Nat Cole tunes mixed with soul music from the 60's. it was fun.

I listened to nothing but scatman john in the 90s. Just that one song "Scatman Ski Bi Dibi Di Bop Bop" over and over.

So I didn't even notice any other trends.

I was working as a concert promoter during the swing revival so we had shows with all the bands mentioned including Chicago’s Mighty Blue Kings who could sell out two nights at a 1,300 capacity room at their peak. That fad also ran concurrent with ska/punk resurgence so I saw a lot of horn driven bands in those days.

Setzer was definitely the best by far and away. Did I like it? Yeah, mainly because my job was to put asses in the seats and those swing bands always did good business. :) :)

I saw Brian Seltzer and he was good. I liked the little bit of squirrel nut zippers I heard. But how do you start a thread on this topic and not mainly take issue with the name of the Cherry Popping Daddies?

I didn’t mind it. Didn’t really love it or hate it. It was kind of a welcome relief from the wave of latinesque Ricky Martin/Jennifer Lopez/Carlos Santana featuring Rob Thomas dreck that preceded it.

I’ve pretty much forgotten about it ever since.

I do dig the Texas Swing tho

There were some bad songs but good musicians. So, I actually appreciated something else in the mix at the time. The music itself wasn’t terrible.

Been digging Asleep at the Wheel and Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks since the 70s.
I didn’t pay much attention to any of those 90s bands other than Seltzers Orchestra.
I was getting my swing on in the 90s with CD reissues of classic stuff like Count Basie.

I used to love the Zippers.

Fun fact: Andrew Bird is the best whistler I've ever seen. He's been solo for years, and he's amazing. Such a great show. And that dude can whistle. Highly recommend checking him out (seriously).
