That article was hugely controversial (well, amongst its readership, anyway) when it first appeared.
 
Man, that second page reads like a five-year-old's breakdown of the development of hip-hop, written with jumbo Crayolas.
 
Black people are so authentic.

He's got an extremely rigid, utilitarian view of what music is/should be, but he's not wrong. The main reason I don't dig a lot of the indie rock bands mentioned in the article is because they lack funk.

Ui is a pretty cool band, too. Sidelong is probably my favorite album of theirs.
 
I thought the article from the New Yorker was interesting...the author talked about what I like so much about The Clash...
 
What elements of swing, slave chants and blues are present in current African-American popular music? Not much.

Fail, I don't like it when eggheads like this guy try to "intellectualize" music.
 
Ok, just got done with the second article...I'm not sure how to respond to that yet...
 
Bagging on awkward white suburban kids because they don't have the funk deep down? Hardly seems sporting.
