Re-posting. More isolated Randy Rhoads tracks (and a bonus Jake track)

Kick Henry Jackassowski
I odubt most people saw it since it was Saturday night, especially Dex who I know would wanna hear these so I hope nobody minds me reposting these in their own thread. I mean...well, it's Randy Rhoads

Anyway, yeah, I was kinda surprised at some of it. Definitely some sloppiness in Over The Mountain rhythm tracks. And I always thought I liked Diary's tone better than BOO's, but actually not so after hearing these.

Diary of A Madman: http://www.box.net/shared/q9eryfgzo7tp7cq85a8j

And your promised bonus Jake track - Bark at the Moon: http://www.box.net/shared/mdrsvx8aviy43lbq5lmc

I always like BOO's tone better myself.

Whatever engineer they had should be shot though. Such a huge difference in recorded tone quality in his and Ted Templemans work with VH. It made all the difference in the world.

It's almost as if they tried way to hard to capture every note and therefore ended up with a midranged mess.

Yeah Im not sure exactly what their thought was really. BOO's sound is definitely unique. I mentioned in the other (deleted) thread that I used to think I didnt like the guitar tone on Blizzard, but after hearing the tracks isolated I realized it's the mix that I have some issues with. Randy's actually getting some great tone. After hearing this stuff, I realize that he actually had better tone on BOO than Diary.

BTW, if you listen to anything here, you should listen to Diary. It's fantastic, especially that middle interlude. I wish they would have released the album from the beginning without Ozzy :embarrassed:

I did listen to that one first to see how it matched with my cover I did with Mike.

Boy, that solo sounds a mess without the mix, I was happy. The acoustic stuff does sound awesome though. Definitely a must learn song though for anyone inclined to that style. His work with droned strings in the interlude is just fab.

Loving Bark at the Moon.

What a machine. The ochestration of the chorus chords comes through great. Too bad Jake got hung up in a lame period for Ozzy. He could have spared us all that is Zakk Wylde. << JJ

Yeah I will give credit where credit is due, Jake was a beast on that tune. Great tone, great playing. I was surprised at the little bit of slop on the solos, it sounds SO clean in the mix, but that's one of the reasons I love hearing stuff like this, its cool to be able to pick those things out especially from monster players like Jake and Randy.

Re: Zakk - I know Ive said it before, but really his earlier stuff is pretty great. He has amazing chops. He chooses not to use them for some reason, and he's a tool for the most part, but there arent too many players in my mind that can match his raw ability.

Zakk <<<< I know...... I liked him too at first when he was just a crazy kid from Jersey and not some renegade Viking that spent time listening to too many Skynard albums.

Yup yup. But I like a lot of his greasy southern stuff too, I actually think he should have stuck with it. The psuedo biker slop thing is corny as hell.

High gain sounds were new, and a lot of veteran engineers/producers had no idea how to properly capture it. Also, remember that BOO had a pretty small recording budget.

I have never really paid attention to Randy's tone, but the over the mountain and flying high again did not sound so good there. I don't know sounds much better and man, Jake is a machine.

Yeah, see......the tone on BOO is actually better than Diary. In the mix I think Diary sounded better but just raw, Randy got some great Marshall growl on Blizzard.

I think if you isolated the tracks on all kinds of music by all kinds of bands, you would be surprised at how crappy some of the tracks sound alone, but when it is all mixed together, with a good bass line holding down the bottom end, the finished product can sound great...

Yeah, its all about how the sounds mix together. That's why I don't bother tweaking my tone at home, I wait until I am jamming with others.

Good stuff... Ozzy has been putting tons of stuff on the FB page for the 30yr... I thought this was cool.

And just because I love you all so much, here is that solo without the talking.

It's weird by themselves they sound bad ass but in the mix not so much, usually it's the other way around.

I think OTM sounds better in the mix. The distorted parts of DOAM sound better in the mix, to me. The rest shouldnt have been crapped up with anything else. I really love the acoustic parts of Diary, just beautiful. Not the most techically challenging pieces, but I love them, the atmosphere they create is outstanding. IDK really surprises me to be honest, he really is getting great sound.

LOL those keyboards make it sound so happy.

I was way to young at the time to have seen him live. That's so kick ass you were able to.
