I have the box
Anyone taken a guitar to have the…

Strings replaced

intonated

neck adjusted

pickguard rewired

if so how much was it or what do they charge you by the hour?

Thank you.

i just got my acoustic (no pickups) to GC for a full set up, cleaning, fret dressing (if nec.) truss, lower strings, and string.
they now ONLY have a "premium" set up and it's $80 plus strings. i don't think that includes swapping pickups or rewiring or such.

i also had same done with my JV Strat a couple months ago, same price.

No idea for a shop job. £20 on Amazon a bit of YouTube and an hour or so and you'll be able to set the thing up for your style way better than any shop could.

I rewire guitars myself. I change my own strings. For adjustments, I take them to a shop that does them for me for free. I buy the guy a bottle of good whiskey every few months.

yea, i was a guitar/bass tech back in the late 80's and early 90's at the biggest shop in town.
i just don't have the patience nor the tools to do that stuff now.
so i pay someone else to do it.
for me, it's just much easier.

I change my own strings and handle seasonal neck tweaks at home. But if I wanna get something playing well and not fuss with it, I’ll get a pro setup which usually costs between $45 and $60 + strings at the places I go. The higher price is usually if there’s some weirdo bridge to be dealt with, etc. Setups usually include string changes, intonation tweaks, and neck adjustments.

Wiring is usually something like $25 - $35. I think the one place I’ve had pickups done charges $35 for the first pickup and a lower rate for each additional. I’ve had a switch de-futzed during a setup and I think there was just some nominal charge. Pro setups by someone who knows what’s up can really make an instrument more fun to play and are a great option if you can afford to trade money for time/effort.

Nope. I don't play guitar, I only play around with guitars and amps. A friend on facebook, he works at the local mom and pop, was in several bands with my bro in law over the years and makes guitars and basses posted this recently.

It's hard to believe that it's November. This beautiful fall weather means a few things for my guitar playing friends. First, it's time to get a humidifier in your acoustic case. I highly recommend the Arion humidifier. It's simple to use and uses tap water. I personally use these for my acoustics. I'll provide the link below where you can purchase the Arion.
Secondly, with the weather changes it also means that your guitar is in need of a set up. From now until the end of the month all electric guitar, acoustic guitar and bass guitar setups are $40.00!!! This doesn't include strings. But for $40.00 you can get your neck adjusted, frets polished, fretboard oiled, string height adjusted, intonation set, electronics cleaned, and restrung. So let's get your guitar ready for winter. Message us about this deal and to set up your appointment.

Also, speaking of intonation... When I gave up painting my Strat and put it back together, with the new Callaham bridge, I had to intonate it. Last time I did it was when I put the Kluson bridge on the Hamer tele. Couldn't remember which way to go if it's flat or sharp so, I hit Google. "you should intonate your guitar with every string change, especially when moving to a different gauge"

Yeah I knew about different gauges but, does anybody intonate their guitar when they change the strings? I'm assuming they mean in the near future and don't mean they are intonating with brand new strings but, I'm just wondering if anybody does that?

What’s your man’s turnaround time? Bradley isn’t hideously far off from my folks’ place and I have a guitar that is due for more than just a restring and I’d be willing to kick some work his way.

I certainly don't.

Yeah, I think that Google result language is maybe ambiguous. I only worry about intonation when I change string gauge/type (e.g., rounds to flats), which is usually what prompts a pro setup because I’m busy and lazy am totally willing and able to let someone else dick around with intonation.

I haven't paid for setup services in forever but I have a friend who pays for everything outside of string changes. He has lived in a handful of different places & the cost really depends on a bunch of factors; geography, demand, reputation, etc.

If I'm tweaking the truss rod more than a quarter turn or so then I'll probably check the intonation and move the saddles if it's required.

Intonation checks are pretty quick and easy, but I don't do it every string change. About once a year I do a deep clean with all the strings off (typically change strings individually) and I'll usually check intonation after that. Some guitars change a bit, others don't. It's not a big deal.

Sometimes I'll do a quick intonation check at the 12th fret but it's usually fine since I'm often just throwing on another set of the same strings in both gauge and brand/version.

I sent him a PM on Facebook.

"Thanks for posting that for me. I really appreciate it. Turn around time is pretty quick on set ups. I can do same day but I prefer next day because if it's a guitar that's in bad shape or in need of serious neck adjustment I can tweak it again before it goes back to the customer."

The last “work” I had done was 4-5 yrs ago when I dropped my D28 and put a nasty crush on the edge of the lower bought. I took it to the go to acoustic guy in Birmingham. He repaired the damage to practically unnoticeable, and polished up my frets while he was at it. I think the bill was $300, totally worth it.
I do my own set ups and sometimes fret jobs. Last fret job I paid for was 10-15 yrs ago on the same Martin. I think it costed me around $100 including a new bone saddle.

I've learned to do most of that stuff myself, which is something I'd really recommend. Practicing on a cheap Squier, Harley Benton or something like that is brilliant.

Only work I've paid for over the last 7-8 years or so was gluing back the bridge on my Yamaha acoustic a couple of months back which had started to lift. Really didn't want to do that myself on a fairly expensive acoustic. On electric guitars I do all the work myself these days.
