Please help me build a pedal board

wagdog

Ack
Backstory: I have an old vox tonelab that I love. I've resurected it a few times. It broke, again during the first song of my most recent gig, leaving me effectless. I'm done with it.

I'd like some small and simple. I need a board. I have a one spot power thing already. I'd like chorus and delay. I don't need dirt pedals (have a couple already).

So what do I need to get started here? Recommended delay and chorus pedals? What about a board? Should I buy or build?

Thanks for any help.

I have a small board just a little bigger than the one Jello posted. It's perfect for a small setup. I do wish it were just a little bigger for my needs but for $20 (SDOTD) I'm not complaining.

What features are you looking for in each pedal?
What's the max number of pedals you anticipate using?

I have one of these for my board. https://reverb.com/item/3556653-everlasting-cases-pedalboard-slant-series-ec1-bhc
It's wood, but is pretty solid. It could hold 8 pedals. At $46 it is probably cheaper than you could build one for (when you factor in time and materials).

What are you looking for in your delay and chorus and what's the budget?

I had this delay for a while and it is a solid delay. Great build quality and sounds awesome.

I now have their Mirror Ball Delay, which is basically the same delay with modulation added.

BTW, neither of those are mine, I am not pushing you my old gear

If you are looking for a traditional chorus, I have the Guyatone Micro Chorus which sounds very close to the old Boss 2 knob chorus. Even has the little volume bump when you kick it on. You can find those or under $50.
If you want to get come crazy chorus sounds or just have great flexibility and control, the EQD Sea Machine is great.
You can always go for the MXR Micro Chorus if you just need the straight on classic chorus sound.

I like that board you posted...so you have a case or anything for it? Or is there one available that you know of?

The company that builds it is Everlasting Cases. They mainly build road cases, so I would think they have one or could build one. I was a little concerned not getting a case for it, but it barely leaves my house and when it does, nobody carries it but me and I am careful with my gear. I mean I'm not loading out from a gig at 3 am tired as shit. The only time my shit leaves my house is to go to Guitar Heels. If I was gigging, I would get some kind of padded bag for it.

I have something similar also. It does the job quite nicely.

This.

I have three Pedaltrain Pedalboards with Mono cases. Since I've bought them there are enough other options that have come on the market and I'm a little tired of how the Pedaltrain dictates pedal placement due to the construction that I'm advocating looking at what else is out there.

I have 4 Gator Boards, 2 Pedal Train and one ATA with a home made board within.

As for boards, really depends on what you want. If you only have a few pedal 2-4, go with the Pedal Train Nano and get a Cioks Adam PS. You can use the One Spot as well.

I am going to leave the pedals alone as I am biased in what I use.

I think an 8 pedal board should do it for me.

I'm looking for a traditional chorus and delay. Nothing fancy; I'm a fan of simple. I think I'll just have to dedicate some time to watch/listen to video demos and then start the inevitable buy/sell period.

I need a tuner as well.

I'm hoping to get a good start with $300-$400 allocated for: board, chorus, delay, tuner, and patch cables.

I have a couple dirt pedals already.

They make a bigger version of my Gator board for 150 with case...I use one for my main board...

Gator also makes a decent power supply for 100.00...it may not fit your budget now, but I'd try to squeeze it in...the One Spots are OK but they can be really noisy, and an isolated power supply runs much quieter...

As far as pedals...

The TC Polytune or Mini Polytune are both budget friendly and good quality...I use a Polytune2 without complaint...

The MXR Carbon Copy Delay and the Chorus are excellent basic pedals that go for relatively low cost...

As far as patch cables go I use Planet Waves Classics that match my cables...but I also use pedal cranks and straight couplers wherever I can...they eliminate the need for a lot of patch cables...

Traditional and simple, I'll second the MXR stuff. It's cheap, reliable and sounds good. You can always snag those used and usually resell them for what you paid if you upgrade or don't like them.

With the $400, snag those used plus the tuner and youve got plenty left for board and patch cables

Here you go. This was my Rod Price board when I was playing in a Foghat tribute.

The wah takes up the real estate of 3 pedals. This is a Gator board that comes with the PS. I made a small block to raise the back pedals up 1/2". Eventually the Arion Chorus was going to be replaced by a BYOC Chorus (Boss CE2 Clone) and the Wampler Delay replaced by an Ibanez AD9 Analog Delay. Band went dormant so the pedals were redistributed to other boards and storage.
