Question: Peavey Classic 30 - replacement speaker?

Another member is replacing a non-stock speaker in his Classic 30. I looked at replacing my original Blue Marvel at one point, but never did it as I was pretty happy with it. The only semi-complaint I have is that the bottom end could be a bit tighter. Not a big deal for what I do though.

That background said, for those of you who own C-30s, what speakers do you prefer and why? Original Blue Marvels count. A lot of guys over at my other forum swear by the blue marvel.

Ones i have thought of:

Celestion G12H30 (prages had one I noticed as I searched for threads)
Weber Alnico BlueDog or 12A125 (for that blue alnico type sound)
Celestion Gold

But that is as far as I have gotten. Like I said, I really like the tone of my amp generally. The bottom end could be tightened if I am being picky, and I would like a more open and less direct sound, but that is partly the nature of the 1x12 so I would not want to drastically change the amp trying to turn a 1x12 into something it is not.

thoughts from you C-30 users?

I dig the Blue Marvel. I haven't changed the speaker in my 30, but did in a Classic 50 I used to have - went with the Warehouse Speakers Green Beret, and initially really liked them, but found overall that I preferred the Blue Marvel.

I haven't replaced the speaker in my Classic 30, but it's something I've thought about doing. Unfortunately, there's no real way to test it out without actually buying a speaker and installing it in the amp. I've read on other forums that the Blue Dog is a good choice, but since sound and tone are so subjective, it's difficult to know whether I would like the same sound as the person(s) saying the Blue Dog is a good choice. I'm interested to know what you decide to do.

Right now, I am not sure I will make any changes. But just interested in what others have done that they liked, and why. The speaker clips you find can tempt you, but no sense in fixing what aint broke either.

I don't have a Classic 30...used to have a 50 though. The Warehouse Reaper 30 sounds like it might be what you're looking for SVL; tighter bottom end with smoothed out mid range. Course, it doesn't sound like you're really in the market for a replacement but window shopping.

I've got the G12H30 in mine.

I talked Micwalt into putting a Hellatone 30 (same as a G12H30, but pre broken in and relabelled).

My amp must have gotten an extra batch of mojo though, because it sounds a lot better than micwalt's does.

In fact, at Pragestock this year, both baimun and micwalt were blown away when I let them hear what just the amp with no external speaker cabinet sounded like, and it only sounds better when I plug in the 112 extension cab that's got a Greenback in it.

Pretty sure they are all sealed cabs, so not exactly like installing in your amp. No Celestions, no Webbers, but they do have half a dozen Jensen, and every Eminence made.

In Manteno IL., it's local to me, had no idea it was there. Chicago peeps could check it out on the way to Bears training camp.

All speakers are 8 ohm. You bring your guitar, and amp. Plug into a hugeass foot switch. 4 foot wide, with two rows of switches. Bring a strap, no place to sit.

If you decide to go, call, strange hours.

It's true, though.
:(

The Hellatone is beefier and darker than the original speaker, but honestly, it's a pretty subtle difference.

I have the Delta Blues so my Classic has a 15" speaker in it - many less choices on replacements. I would like a tighter bottom end but I'll stick wioth the Blue Marvel for now. I think Weber and Eminence do make 15" speakers though.

was using a Weber California 15 quite a bit for some of my Fender amps. recommend it for cleans and light od tones for sure.
