Newsflash! OK, so, you know I might be wrong, but I'm gonna say it anyway: Bill Withers is flat on "Lovely Day"

On those long stretched out "a lovely daaaaaaaaaaaay" he's just a little bit flat and every time I hear it it bugs me. But maybe I'm wrong. But I'm pretty sure he's flat.

I think the real problem lies in the doubling of that vocal. The pitch discrepancy between the two takes of him singing that note is too great, and it really calls your attention to the flatness of one of the takes (think Anthony Kiedis).
At the end of the song, he sings a higher note, and it's not doubled. It's not perfectly in tune either, but because it's by itself, it sounds just fine.
Also, after 20+ years of auto-tune, our ears are more persnickety about pitch than they used to be.

Doesn't matter to me. In my world I'm always singing my parody version in my head:

Then I look at you
And the world's not right for me
Just one look at you
And I know it's gonna be

A fucked up daaaaaaayyyyy....
(Fucked up day, Fucked up day, Fucked up day, FUCKED UP day, ...)

And yes, I picture a specific person

The song is perfect. It’s a song that someone said I can’t put my finger on it but…. …put it out just like that.
