My city has literally been a dumpster fire today....

... the landfill caught on fire, and they've not been able to put it out all day because of the methane that (usually) is siphoned out of the giant hill and runs a gas to electric power plant.

One of the radio stations has been making fun by playing all different kinds of "Fire" songs all day.... Hendrix, the Cult, Talking Heads, Van Halen, Metallica.... hillarious.

The weirdest thing for me is that I live where it's miles of subdivisions leading to downtown.... or I take the highway over to South Bend.


I'm not used to seeing south of town where there are just miles and miles of farmland (and landfill fires). I don't even see a 7-11 or a Starbucks!

Very sad. But also very eerie if you ever get a chance to go there. The streets are split open and the asphalt is literally hot on your feet, with steam and smoke rising up out of cracks in the ground.

The day my wife and I went on our first date a landfill fire started not far from where she lived. It burned for years. We always joked that as long as the fire went on we would be together, and we dreaded the day it would be put out. Because it was so deep underground spraying water on top was useless. they eventually ran a water main to the site, stuck it under ground and just ran it 24 hours a day until it was out. Lost track of the whole thing though and have no idea when it was actually put out.
