Modellers vs amps, my latest observation.

I’ve never gotten the whole “doesn’t feel right” thing. Maybe it’s because I played solid state amps for years before I got a tube amp. Are there feel differences? Sure. Is it enough to make me play differently or worse? Absolutely not. Do they all sound pleasant to my ears when dialed in correctly? Absolutely.

Just got tired of my Headrush MX5 and bought a decent amp, but now I want to get a NuX Trident.

I found I like the variety, but missed the simplicity of having everything controllable with knobs in front of me.

And that H&K I bought is way too much for a living room amp.

Depends on the amp. I started with an SS amp way back when and then moved to tube amps a year later. Tube amps have been my prefernce since 1979. I have used 2 different Quilter Amp (SS) which I enjoy. Sadly getting rid of one but keeping the ole Tone Block 200. As for modeling, started with Line6 LivePOD XT which was great for recording and online playing until it broke. Of the new ones, two sterile to me. Just a personal flavor.

High gain I don’t notice as much… but my clean and mid gain where the compression and distortion changes when I change my pick attack or alternate legato with beating the shit out of the instrument….

…. The Kemper performs exceptionally well and is definitely giggable, but the tube amp is a whole ‘nuther level up. :baimun:

I’m too stupid to use modelers, I get option paralysis.
The only models I use are the amp and pedal sims in Logic, cause I’m also too lazy to mic up cabinets.

With ADD I don’t have the patience for all the menu diving and bullshit with most modellers… that’s what led me to the Kemper because it’s more like “load uo whichever amp you like” and then there are physical knobs that are what you would use on a typical amp.

If you want to throw an effect before or after, color coded buttons that you treat the same way… add, toggle on and off with the light up button, turn knob.

Most cave man friendly of the digital shit.

I was interested in Kemper from their early days. The idea of a snapshot capture of an amp adjusted to a sweet spot appealed to me. But, I did not want to shell out the money.

The most I spent on a modeling setup was an Avid Eleven Rack & Behringer FCB1010 controller + Eureka Prom microchip. IIRC it cost $700 11R/w expansion pack, $199 FCB and $50 Eu Prm + $ midi cables ($950+ total). I was happy with the sound at the time, and found it relatively intuitive to program. But, the feel was stiff, similar to the various L6 POD units that I owned beforehand, Bean POD, XT Live, POD HD.

I bought the HX Stomp early days, new, discounted to $449. It took a few months for the HX to show up at my door.

The ToneX One was $179. The ToneX gives me what I was hoping for from an amp capture device in terms of feel and sound.

The HX has a plethora of great digital FX. And it hosts custom speaker IR’s. I don’t really use the amp models because I hate tweaking.

I more lazy. I prefer to spend my time doing other things so I prefer the plug and play with simple amps and pedals.

I've been messing around with the UA Dream 65 plugin for a couple of days. Got the bundle, so I have that, the tweed, the Plexi and the AC30.

So far I like it. It does feel a bit stiff compared with a real amp in a room, but I gotta say they've nailed the tone overall, and it can handle humbuckers too.
