The Mazda furai was a design study and tech development vehicle mazda built in 2007. A lot of people thought it might have been mazda showing interest in LeMans racing again. Anyway, it was a mid engine car built on mazda's LeMans chassis with a 450 hp rotary engine. It apparently was insanely fast. Here is a picture of the car and what happened after an engine fire when being tested at Top Gear.

If you think the 450 hp number is a little weak for a supercar or racer, keep in mind that this sucker was made of lots of advanced materials and weighed around 1300 pounds with fuel and a driver. 0-60 times were reported to be under 3 seconds. The power to weight ratio was similar to a modern F1 car and three times better than a Bugatti Veyron.

This pic shows that unlike most 'concept' cars, the furia was a real car your could drive....quickly.

Which Top Gear?

UK Top Gear = Crazy cars
US Top Gear = Doing crazy and mostly stupid things in cars

Top Gear UK. It was apparently being tested for an article in their UK Top Gear magazine.

US Top Gear doesn't exists as far as I'm concerned.

If you haven't watched it in a while, you should give it another chance. Since they finally ditched the UK clone format and started doing their own brand of the show it has gotten much, much better.

There are no more stars in reasonably priced car, no more Stig, just the 3 of them setting out on silly, car based adventures. I must say, they have built a lot of great chemistry between them. Sure, they are still a bit scripted and cliche, but it is very entertaining.

I will give it a shot then. I watched two or three episodes when it premiered. I really disliked their attempt at doing the original's schtick verbatim.

That looks like a variant of the 20B three-rotor they used in the old 787B car. Badass to be sure, but not exactly a stable motor. Shame to see a car like that go out like that.

It is a variant of the 20B 3 rotor from the 787B car, but with some refinements over that engine.

Here is the glorious noise it makes on a racetrack.

I have watched some and would like it better if they weren't using mother fucking TRUCKS 85% of the time.

Apparently, it cost a little over 4 million dollars to build, not including designer time and such.

TGA is definitely better than it was now that they've changed the format. My only complaint about the last season is I'd still like to see them not have to stick to character so much: like when it's not a truck challenge, Tanner is going to pick a small import, Rutledge is gong to bring the kooky outsider choice and Adam is going to have some massive piece of American iron.....no matter what the challenge is. Sometimes it feels like the car version of the breakfast club. Adam is Jud Nelson, Rutledge is Ally Sheedy and Tanner is Emilo Estevez. Oh, they still need to get someone besides Tanner some driving skills.
