Help!I'maRock!

Mediocringly Derivative
We're buying a new mattress to be delivered the day we move into our new place, instead of hauling our old one out there that neither of us like for various reasons. So tell me about your mattress, why you bought it, how much you bought it for, where you bought it from, and your great experiences/horror stories.

Thanks!

Buy the firmest mattress you can find, then (preferably while still at a mattress store) have mock intercourse to see how the mattress feels, because there is nothing worse than a memory foam mattress turning into the quicksand from The Neverending Story when you're trying to Help!I'maNut.

LOL.

We're not buying an all memory foam mattress. The wife hates them. It'll be an innerspring or hybrid.

We bought a Temperpedic about 5 years ago. I can’t remember how much it cost, but it’s the best thing I’ve ever slept on. The first week, I hated it, but then I realized I wasn’t waking up with my body aching and I wasn’t waking up 3 or 4 times a night with one of my arms numb and tingling. I hate sleeping in anything else.

My current mattress is a fancy Swiss thingamajig. I don't think they exist in America. What I can offer from my last mattress is to avoid memory foam like the plague. It is comfortable as hell at first, but after a while you really sink in deep and it isn't super comfortable as you can get 'stuck' in a position and can't turn over easily. I found myself feeling 'stuck' and waking up to change positions. Not restful at all. The shit is HOT in the summer, and it isn't so pleasant to sleep on if you always feel warm at night, even if you have your AC on all the time. Also, the lack of springs and rebound, and the sinking in phenomenon makes it less than ideal for "marital relations". Never again.

I’m willing to do a hybrid bed, but definitely not full memory foam. Heard this exact story too many times.

I forgot what brand ours is. I could wake up Mrs. T during her nap to check, but I'm not that stupid.

If you want to avoid the sagging mattress syndrome, skip the pillow tops. All of them. The more we traveled, the more we starting liking firm mattresses. We chose the second most firm mattress we tested at The Mattress Firm.

These mattress places all run the same bullshit "sales", so research the price ranges first. Just when you are about to buy the one you like, tell them you're going to shop around. Welcome to the new, lower price!

We tried some pillow top type toppers, but the underlying give in the memory foam still created problems. After a couple of years I started waking up with a real sore hip/shoulder from the sinking in thing. I'm not a fat person, so I assume this would be an issue for anyone. The pillow top seemed to make this worse, as it took the body contour memory foam thing (love it or hate it) and spread the support out over a broader area. I think the contributed to the hip/shoulder thing. I found I would sink into a U shape around the hip, which probably isn't good.

Tig is right, mattress sales in the US are all crapola. Where did all the crooked car salespeople go when car buyers got more sophisticated with internet price searches and reviews....mattress sales.

My current bed has a cool 'spring' system where the springs are wood arches made of different types of wood (yew and maple), topped with a thin wool bed top. It is the best bed ever.

Yeah, I want to avoid Mattress Firm, but the Reserve Firm mattress was the one we liked best today.

Ours is 10 years old. Don't remember the brand. Serta? Seally? We bought it at Turk Funiture in Kankakee. Befor they moved to Bradley.

Only advice I can give is agree no pillow top. Nobody has mentioned yet, you can't flip a pillow top.

We have a Stearns and Foster that's fairly firm. We had another that was softer that became our guest room bed when we got this one.
We got our daughter a Serta mattress when she got big enough for a double bed. Occasionally I'll lay down with her til she falls asleep, but when I do I can't keep my eyes open. It's extremely comfortable.

This. Love ours.
