Mama I'm Coming Home

White Gold

Weaponized Spatula
Since I am not a master on effects, I was wondering if I could get some help figuring out what effects are being used on the clean parts of the main riff and song of Mama I'm Coming Home.

And how can I figure out what effects are being used so I don't alwasy have to ask...

Is it just practice listening to the sound over the years?

I beat owning the accual equipment helps...

Thanks guys! If I want to do something in music (for a career), I should really start to get used to this kind of stuff...

zakk used a cranked Marshall JCM800 with a BOSS SD-1, CH-1 and Dunlop Rotovibe. any delay and reverb were added in the mix.

one of the first guitar magazines i ever bought had an interview with him where he talked about his setup. somehow, i remembered it.

Yeah...I am talking about the acoustic part...

But in general, can you guys listen to something and say, "Oh that's a BOSS-2" just by listening to it?

That doesn't seem possible, but how do people figure out what equipment is used? Just by messing around looking for the right tone?

Not all that often no, but I can usually pick out what guitar/amp brand combinations were used, especially on older recordings. As an example, the Les Paul and Marshall sound is a very distinct one that's easy to pick up on, same with the Strat and Twin sound.

Almost impossible with the newer recordings, as there are lots of layering and studio trickery everywhere.

Allright...thanks!

So the best bet is just to look up what equipment they used instead of experimenting?

No problem.

I always liked angus' rig. You'll appreciate that one.

Gibson SG >>>>> Marshall.

Done. biggrin

there's certain situations where you can tell what a guitarist is playing. Ibanez Tubescreamers have a certain sound. Mesa Rectos have a certain sound. the Fender Stratocaster 4 position. etc.

but there's also a lot of tones that can be replicated, sometimes in the most unlikely ways. it all comes down to the player and knowing exactly what your equipment can do, and how you can exploit its features.

i just got the new Jeff Beck dvd. he uses a strat, a couple of Marshalls, a RAT, wah, ring modulator, and slide. its a clinic on what you can do with a mastery not only of technique, but the equipment that provides the sound.
