Spalt Instruments R 1803 "The Glass Flower Garden" 2019

This absolutely stunning guitar is an R 1803 from Spalt Instruments out in dubbed 'The Glass Flower Garden'. Made up in bulk from wonderfully figured mahogany for both the body and the neck, the guitar really takes a leap into the surreal when you factor in the resin top and the scene that unfolds within. Sonically, this top isn't dissimilar to a maple cap, and with the high grade flame maple body inserts, this is certainly captured in the sonic identity of instrument. The ebony fretboard that tops the aforementioned mahogany neck is incredibly smooth all the way through, with fantastic playability and accessibility to boot. This guitar is as easy to play as it is inspiring. The last port of call in talking about this striking instrument is the Spalt Single Coil Pickup with its gorgeous cover custom made from a French 1930s hair clip. Coupled with the Graph Tech Piezo Pickup incorporated into the bridge, there's a deceptively wide range of tones on tap with this magnificent piece.

You've got to take these guitars with a grain of salt; they're exhibition or commission pieces intended to be playable artistic expressions.

In some of the interviews I've read with the builder, that's the reaction he wants to provoke from both camps....those who appreciate traditional guitar designs and the folks looking at it from the artistic perspective.

He works all over the map from traditional builds to crazy abstract guitars.

That needs to be buried in an unmarked grave at midnight, encircled with salt.
