Help! Looking to Compile the Greatest Wedding Reception Playlist of All Time!!!

Of all time!!!!

DJ's or live acts give me a hand, or anyone that has an opinion actually. All help appreciated.

I started a bit of a list, my daughter (1992) will be getting married in October and asked me if I could help Compile a playlist for the reception. I'm completely lacking in dance tracks and contemporary....fuggetabahtit. way to easy to see that I'm an eighties kid.

So far I have a list of this here. Help me add tracks that are must haves. I mean some German songs will be getting added, but don't you worry about those.

So far:

[ ] Groove Tonight
[ ] I Can Dream About You - Dan Hartman (I think)
[ ] Groove is in the Heart
[ ] Telephone - Lady Gaga
[ ] what I Like About You
[ ] My Shirona
[ ] Hey ya
[ ] Twist and Shout
[ ] Can't Hold Us - Macklemore
[ ] Valerie
[ ] Hot in Here - Nelly
[ ] Turn down for what
[ ] Semi Charmed Life
[ ] Can't Stop The Feeling - Justin Timberlake
[ ] September
[ ] Don't Stop til You Get Enough
[ ] California Love
[ ] In da Club
[ ] Should I Stay, Or should I go
[ ] Shake it Off
[ ] What is Love
[ ] Modern Love
[ ] Celebration - Kool and the Gang
[ ] Love Shack
[ ] ABC
[ ] Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch
[ ] Thinking out Loud - Ed Sheeran
[ ] What a Wonderful World
[ ] Unchained Melody -
[ ] I got you- James Brown
[ ] Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours
[ ] Uptown Funk
[ ] Safe and Sound - Capitol Cities
[ ] Dancing in the Dark
[ ] Just Like Heaven - the Cure
[ ] Shut up and Dance
[ ] Crazy in Love
[ ] Get Lucky -Daft Punk
[ ] Iris - GooGoo Dolls
[ ] Time After Time
[ ] Ain't Nobody - Chaka Kahn
[ ] Old Time Rock and Roll
[ ] I Was Made For Loving You - Kiss

I know some of these tires are technically wrong, but I know them as that. So give me a hand here.

Should I add a mashup or two?

My sister got married earlier this year and the reception was kind of weird. My mom and her siblings grew up jitterbugging and will dance it up if they're playing the right type of music. Some of their kids picked it up some did not. If they would've just done that for 3 hours it would've been great, but the DJ, who is friends with the groom, kept trying to make modern hip hop a thing because the few teenage girls that were there would dance to it. It was awkward.

Line dances also go over well around here.

Its good enough. Throw Shout in there...always packs the floor.

However if the people are having dinner at the reception I think you are starting off with too big a bang. You have to remember that many of these folks are from out of town and maybe haven't seen each other in years...they want to catch up and can't do it while the music is going full tilt. My wedding band let 30 seconds to a full minute between tunes during dinner and they were all lite jazz to soft rock. The party really didn't start until the second set.

I've been to a wedding reception where this was the first song played. No, realli!

He's not coming to Germany to lend me a hand, so.... Actually I was hoping he'd give some tips.

I'm ripped out my tits on Vegas at.... 6am UK time after a day travelling.

Johnny Dapp, pure German banger get that in there.

In the UK at least those are stone dead low hanging fruit that will get people dancing.

Try to work out mini sets. An 'average' gig for me might go:

Formal dances
Bangers
80s (whitney houston, dire straits, erasure)
Motown / stax
Top 40 upbeat stuff (jt, bruno mars etc...)
Background for the evebing foid (usually some classic soul or indie depending on the bride and groom)
Rest of night is usually dancey, cheese, classics (brown eyed girl, maggie may etc...)

Thanks for the advice, and yes, low hanging fruit is exactly what I'm going for. Not trying to be a DJ "artist" and make some deep impact.

Knowing my daughter she'll throw enough shit on the list that screws it up. :) My choices are meant to get the booties shaking. (Oh shit, I forgot Tag Team and Rob Bass :embarrassed: )

Edit about what I said about my daughter: I said she would throw on enough tracks that would be meant to be "deep", but I'll have to give her credit. When I was looking at her Spotify lost she's compiling I noticed that for a 25 year old she at least has the correct version of "Ain't Nobody" on there from Chaka Kahn and not the cover. There's Hope yet.

Just play Who Let the Dogs Out, "Legs" by ZZ Top, Uptown Funk, "Photograph" by Nickelback.

Usually I play WLTDO when the couple releases their hounds onto the floor. Then "Legs" when the bride gets her garter taken off.

Then Uptown Funk plays when the family members who live uptown arrive (not until later). Then Photograph when they look at their old high school yearbooks.

Then I leave to do another wedding that goes the same way as that one.
