Les Paul says he invented the solid body electric guitar.

No he didn't.

Loyd Loar's Vivitone brand had a solid body electric in the mid 30's. Rickenbacher's (yes they spelled it that way back then) had a solid bakelite body guitar in early '35. These were kinda a cross between the Hawaiian Lap Steels popular at the time and the newly electrified Spanish guitars...they died an death of indifference when the War broke out.

The famous "Log" that Les built in '41 wasn't really a fully solid body guitar and Gibson laughed him out of the factory when he showed it to them. Paul Bigsby made a guitar for Merle Travis in '47 that was a thoroughly modern solid body. In early '50 Leo had the Esquire up and running and when Gibson saw that the solid body was here to stay they signed Les up.

Yeah - I think Paul Bigsby invented the "electric guitar" as we know it. Fender and Gibson made their own takes on it, but they're copies that's for sure (to me).

Things Les Paul allegedly invented...

The solid body guitar...
Multitrack recording...
Overdubbing (sound on sound)
Delay...
Flanging...

I mean, unless he invented the Ric frying pan, I ain’t buying it. His actual inventions and contributions were amazing. To just throw in that he invented the solid body electric is weak sauce, IMO.

Les Paul also invented volcanoes, whiskey, anal sex, perfume, hovercraft technology and the Tindr app.

He's a very big deal.
