Achtung! It's a good time to buy the new Decemberists record on Amazon!

Apparently the new Decemberists record came out today, and Amazon is selling the MP3 download for four dollars. That's a cherry deal if I've ever seen one. Or, if you are a stickler for physical media like me, you can pick up the CD for seven bucks.

The Onion's AV Club has a nice article about the new record, including some samples, which is how I found out that the release was today.

If you like REM, the first sample song features Peter Buck on guitar, and has a real "this one goes out to the ones I love" vibe.

As soon as I get home I'm, on it. :thu: Totally spaced on the release date on this one... been really focused on snagging the new Iron & Wine next week.

What genre are they?

If I remember right I think someone recommended them to me as a band I would probably like.

New album is supposed to be pretty different... I think you'll like this one though:

On a whole though their "sound" is indie with a baroque pop sound. I dig it a lot.

Tempting. I always want to like their records, but come up short. The price is right, so there's that. Thanks for the heads-up.

In their defense, they do tend to be "grow on you" type records that hold up well to relistening. They reward persistence, and if you're persistent, there is that.

I like this one on a track-by-track basis and, like you say, I feel like I should like it, but for some reason, it's underwhelming when taken as a whole.

That seems consistent with what Collin Malloy was saying about this record in the interview I posted.

Yeah. I've given a couple of their records the listen-and-re-listen treatment w/ some taste testing mixed in and it just doesn't click. The pre-release nibbles I've heard from this new one are nice, but I cannot recall much about them after they're through. I might pick up this latest one (I've some gift card money burning a hole) and give it the old college try one last time.

I've noticed that Best Buy seems to be price matching Amazon on a few things recently. I wonder what's up?

Dunno, I was just trying to avoid shipping costs and pay sales tax instead. Haven't heard the album yet, but I'm a fan, so not a huge gamble at $7.

I like the tracks I have heard so far on a first listen.

EDIT: I listened some more now and really like this album. But I also really like "Reckoning" and "Life's Rich Pageant" era REM, and clearly some of the songs are inspired by that period REM. I listened to "Calamity" and thought to myself that one of the guitars sounded just like Peter Buck. Got home and looked into it, and sure enough, Peter joined them for that song. The "Down by the Water" song also sounds a lot like "The One I Love", to the point where you almost want to start singing the chorus. But I like it!

I'm not liking this one as much as "the hazards of love". The girlfiend and i are going to toronto Feb 1 to see them in concert.
