ISO Cab

Ronk

Monkey With Tools
I am having a rough time trying to get a good recorded guitar tone at basement levels so I am thinking of building one of these tomorrow in a 2x12 version.

Any opinions on construction, dos/don't s, modifications etc would be appreciated.

I have not intention on using those angle brackets I will probably rip some 1x and glue and screw them in the seams.

Also, how important is it to buy that expensive foam will insulation or that packing foam cut it?

I built one a few years ago.

Dual walled MDF with regular fiberglass insulation in between the walls. Then I used a mattress pad to line the inside to knock down the standing waves. Not counting the speaker, it probably cost me $50-$75.

It doesn't stop all the noise from coming out, but you can crank a 50 watt tube amp into it and still carry on a conversation standing beside it.

It does have its own sound though. You'll have to do a little EQing at mixdown to make it sound just right.

I don't have anything uploaded where I used it, I don't think, but one of my old bands recorded a full CD with rhythm guitar, bass, and drums done live simultaneously. Worked well.

I kinda want to have an ISO Box for recording my Bassman, but I can get pretty much any tone I need with my modelers.

Get one of these instead and record direct.

I can't bring myself to... I have some nice amps w/out a master volume (Dr Z Carmen Ghia, Blackheart) that I would love to see what they sound like recorded cranked.

@ Saint... That looks cool... Trying to save a little $ right now. Looking forward to the review and clips though.

I saw this a NAMM last year in it is cool. You can record either via XLR or through USB port. Jet City fans were hoping we could get it unloaded as we all want to put our own speaker in. That to me is one of the pitfalls. For a while Doug (1/3 Jet City owner) was contemplating it the unloaded cab. Economical too $399 street price. I don't have the wood working skills you and Prages have.

FWIW, there was very little woodworking skill involved in building my ISO cab. All the cuts were made with a circular saw and it's held together with wood screws. I didn't worry about making it pretty or making it particularly road worthy, since I knew it wasn't going to leave the house. It does weigh a metric ton though.

Ok... I never know what to play for these so if you want to hear something different let me know. This is my LP into the Ghia - the amp is a little over half volume. 2 guitar tracks(2 mics each side) dry... I can't say that I have found the sweet spot mic placement wise... but you can get an idea of the natural crunch.

Les Paul - Ghia

I dig it because you get no outside noise now. Just pure amp tone.
