Dig it! Inbound Takamine electric!

Duller than cardboard
This is a total nostalgia sucker-buy for me—I had one of these when they were new 35 years ago. Mine was black without the trem but frankly this looks better.

I don't know the history on these, which factory they came from, or anything like that. Takamine made them for about fifteen minutes in the mid-80s and then dropped the line. They were just another affordable Japanese option at the time and I remember liking mine.

It’s pretty cool, but that quiet paint job definitely wasn’t right for the mid eighties. I would love to see one of these in dayglo green.

Nice! HNGD. I had a Takamine solid body I bought in a Goodwill store for $60. If I recall it was Matsumoku MIJ. A lot like an Electra with the MMK45 pickups. It also had stainless steel frets and a brass nut. It played great. I cleaned it up and flipped it for a considerable profit.

They had two doublecut models and then they had a pointy Explorer looking thing. They offered this color, black, cream, and then a blueburst and a redburst. Those finishes look like an 80s nightmare. The "premium" GZ300 got a brownburst.

The blue burst is cool. That rootbeer bust is great. But that red burst looks like an old Teisco.

It has arrived.

It's a little homely and it's got a whiff of 80s metal to it, but it's not pointy and hot pink with tiger stripes and a Floyd. You could play this out somewhere today and not be too embarrassed.

Aesthetics aside, this is a shockingly nice instrument. I don't know if this is Matsumoku but there's really nothing to complain about at all. This is just a relic from that era where Americans were waaaaaaaay too hung up on country of origin.

$375 for the guitar, case, and shipping feels like a great deal. It's a weird piece of Takamine history plus there's the personal sentimental nostalgia dopamine hit.

I think it's kinda cool. It ain't pretty, but there's something about it.
I have a Peavey 12-string electric that's the same way.
HNGD!

I’d bet those are s.s. frets.
Why would you suspect that? That can't have been common 35 years ago on a middle of the road import guitar, right?

But there's almost no fret wear at all and the notes do have a little zing to them...

Believe it or not s.s. frets were quite common on Takemine electrics. Most if not all had them. The pups were MMK45s. Highly sought after ceramics. Many had brass nuts that usually got replaced. They shared many of these features with the Electra (Westone) Guitars.

Yeah, these frets basically look brand new and you can hear that telltale sparkle/zing/whatever.

Far out. :thu:

I was thinking, sometime between the 80s and now, somebody decided they wanted a gold top, was too lazy to do the headstock too. Didn't want to say anything/crap on your NGD. Then I saw the first pic you posted.

That's crazy.

I never even knew Takamine made electric guitars. I love my acoustic from them. I love the cool gray color of your new axe. Clearly the best color of all the examples shown in the thread.
