If you were gonna get a guitar professionally painted...

Who would you pay to do it? How much would you expect to spend? I'm thinking of painting my Firebird sparkle royal purple (don't judge me) and I have no idea who to send it to. Just looking for opinions. Something similar to this color

I’d judge you more for the Firebird than the purple sparkle.

Most of the custom guitar finishers I kept track of have gone under. What's left, that handle "funky" finishes, have pretty poor reps. Most of the revered finishers, like Pat Wilkins, handle mostly "classic" and restoration style finishes.

Be forewarned, to get an existing, set-neck guitar stripped and finished in a metallic flake will cost $700-1000 from just about any decent shop. Plus, the actual re-sale value of the instrument may decrease.

I’ve never personally used him, but I’ve heard good things about Marty Bell’s work.

I've wanted a Firebird since I started playing. I love the shape. However, it's cured me of being a Gibson fan. The setup from the factory was frankly a hot mess. I started tinkering with trying to get it right and it's beyond my skill. The nut is cut horribly, the action was a mile off, and it isn't staying in tune at all since the weather started getting cooler. I just dropped it off with a local luthier. The paint is worse. There's a finish run on the top of the headstock. There's also orange peel on both sides of the truss rod cover. Where the neck through is attached to the body wings the nitro is too thin and you can see the wood through it. You can see the wood where the control cavity cover is routed, like as in you can see where the finish wasn't applied correctly all the way around the cover even with the cover on.

I've gone back and forth thinking that I'm being too picky, and letting my OCD drive me nuts about it. I've owned a bunch of fenders (mostly offsets) around the same price point and they've all been close to flawless. The PRS I just bought is absolutely flawless. At this point I really don't think I could sell it so I'm going balls deep into turning it into something I want.

Basically the next Gibson I buy is going to be an Edwards, Bacchus, or Tokai.

I agree that a high quality job done by a pro would run upwards of a thousand bucks.

I love purple sparkle.

I love Firebirds.

If you defile a Firebird by having finished in purple sparkle... I will look for you. I will find you, and I will kill you.
