I made a dog leash this weekend ! (Pic heavy)

Dogue in teh desert
So for the past number of years I've been using a ruff wear flatout leash , in fact going back to my previous dog Marvin (rip) I used one...the old version which I had was better than the new ones but the concept is that you had a quick release snap buckle which you could adjust to wear over the shoulder, around the waist, tie to a tree of any size , etc. it also had a 'traffic control (short grab) loop...in a nutshell a very functional leash especially for people who like to hike, etc.

Fast forward to Sonny and it was time for (yet) another leash (I'm a leash and collar whore :embarrassed:) and in my search for something new and exciting but had to be the same functionality I ran across two great products...the first called https://mydogscool.com here is a youtube demo this guy had some great ideas like his use of a genuine rock climbing swivel, i mean his stuff looks pretty well bombproof ...shit ain't gonna let you down..good aesthetics, etc, etc....

The one I ultimately went with was "surepaw" because I mean gol' damn that logo is FANTASTIC...and then you got the play on sherpa/surepaw...frickin' cool not to mention the use of the handle he had which I found out is called a prusik. So he makes a great product, good communication, a nice guy and he had more color options........BUT it took forever to get mainly because he had like a two week lead in time, not sure why but it was in the email receipt notifying it would ship out in a couple weeks......

Both are around 45 bucks but hand made, unique, totally functional and will last longer than any china crap you'll buy at petsmart plus they are much more comfy in hand due to the round nature...blah blah. Besides that you'll have the badest ass leash in your neighborhood...maybe your town :stare:

OK....so finally I decided I wanted to make one myself, didn't look to hard and I decided I wanted a real long lead (i made a 9 foot lead and if I wanna go real crazy i can have it connected to the other leash for 15 feet...my dogs are squirel/lizard chaser)which can ultimately be shortend to any length you want here is the Surepaw video which has a great demostration of the functionality

anyway I think mine turned out as good or even better. i did some research, found a great video which showed how to secure the ends before the shrinkwrap tubing and bought some rope and carabiners at the local outdoors /climbing store. ...so below is a rundown of what you need and how to make one if any of you are interested....

and BTW if anyone wants i will make you one free no charge just send me a paypal for the supplies...hell i'll probably even eat the shipping because i LOVE making these (just PM me) and quite frankely I think i might even try etsying these things...i think I've found my calling, pretty excited because I have ideas and shite for a few other items, even have a name in mind :embarrassed:

But anyway here goes...

You need....

about a two more feet rope than you finished length planned. So if you want a 6 ft buy 8 ft. rope...get good pro quality from a climbing shop...it's not much more expensive. 10mm/3/8th

also need two carabiners...again get real ones made for actual climbing and not the keychain crap cuz you don't want fido breaking loose!

some smaller diameter 'accesory cord 8mm or 7mm

some 2 or 3mm twine or accessory cord for the constrictor knots.

some heavy duty heatshrink tubing in 7/8th diameter from home depot. If you find 4-1 shrink buy that shrink tube comes in 2-1 , etc and 4 - 1 has the ability to shrink down smaller.

a lighter

a heat gun (I borrowed the one from work)

a sharp knife, maybe scissors if your a wimp

a beverage

an internet connection for you tubing your knots which will be the Constrictor knot, the prusik, and the double fisherman. The constictor knot tightens the crap out of the ends (especially if you use two pair pliers to snug up) and then the shrink wrap seals the deal.

the video i used was this one which should start around 3:44 he demonstrates the 'constrictor knot" and he does a great tutorial. just google up the prusik and the double fisherman...the double fisherman really through me for a loop (pun intended) and took a while to "master".

the collar end. I used four constrictor knots...this thing ain't coming apart

the handle end before the shrink tubing...again four constrictor knots. I generally don't ever use the Handle but usually just loop the lead in my hand but whatever :embarrassed:

the end product (mine is the green one), side by side with the purchased "sure paw". I used a smaller "prussic" loop.

the side by side of the collar end

side by side of the handle ends

Imagine the chair as a post or a tree, your waist or around your shoulder, etc
IMG_0461.JPG

you could shorten it in half and have a 4.5 ft lead or you could tie a knot up top and even use it as a two dog walking coupler using each carabiner on a dog!
IMG_0462.JPG

I often hitch one end to the receiver hitch of my vehicle whilst camping, etc like below (imagine the red lead as the hitch)
IMG_0463.JPG

with my shorter 'prusik" i can roll it over and lock it into a ball if I want

The "stable" :embarrassed: hanging on the wall

and finally the tools you'll need

I hope this helps *spits*

Neat, I like it.

If you do start selling these, you might want to consider different weights of rope/carabiners for people who have small/medium/large dogs. Just a thought.

That's a good idea. The medium and large dogs could use the same weights/diameter I know. The small guys would probably work with 7 or 8 mm rope , you could go smaller but then it becomes a comfort issue in your hand 9the small stuff could dig in but I'm sure I could make a handle type thing.. There's not too many small mini "real" carabiners but there's a few smaller ones otherwise you get into keychain crap.

Cool. I don't have any dogs. They would die of starvation every time I left for a trip. Cincinnati on Monday. Think you could use these for restraints? Like for my dating life?

You know I get 100 foot rope that looks similar to that at the Tractor Supply Store and make a leash up for my daughter's dog that's 100 foot long. When I go to the shop for long periods of time I tie it to the door and it keeps her happy for hours. Also when I take her to the mail box I use it so she can streatch her legs without jerking me around. Nice work on those by the way.

Cool man, didn't know you had a dog.
you learn something everyday. Maybe I could get a dogleash business going along with being a professional dog walker and then I could finally give the finger to the MAN...pipe dreams but dreams are what it's all about...amiright *spits*

yes I could make you a pair of handcuffs...in my research of knots I found some useful knot ties which can be used as handcuffs
