I am just about ready to throw in the musical towel

I say give up music and devote your new found time to inventing a perpetual motion machine. Your odds of success are much higher.

Musical issues are usually not musical. You and the guitarist don't agree on 'things,' which leads to trouble.

Usually musicians go by a) personality; and b) chops/skills/musical capacity. But it's a lot better to have a common, shared goal. For example, mastering a catalog of 30-40 original songs that can be played at any moment. Writing 10 new songs every 18 months. That's a goal. etc.

People always feel worst when expectations and reality aren't aligned. Rethink how you're setting expectations and it will likely help.

You can't conjure someone. So you're getting frustrated about something you fundamentally can't control. I know what my shrink would say about that.

You're not going to throw in the towel. You can't. Music is in you, and it will demand to come out.

Maybe the Bird Index has run its course. Maybe not. I have some advice: now is a great time to do something completely different.

Play guitar, look for a bass player. I once talked a good friend into playing bass in a band with me instead guitar which he was playing at the time. He was mediocre at guitar but turned into a great bass player. I had a great time playing with him until I broke up the band to study sitar for a few years.

Thanks George

I think you should just move forward with you on guitar/vocals and the drummer. You can wear nothing but red and white, maybe play those old 60's guitar that were made of plastic.

Stick with guitar and get a floor pedal thingy to play bass loops. You’ll eventually find the right match, guitar or bass.

What resources are you using to find people? My band found me via bandmix. I found our new singer on Craigslist. Have you tried posting on TGP? Fliers in local venues and music shops work too. Grindr?

Smurfy one... you have talent. I think anything you have posted here is pretty good stuff. Don't even think of quitting. Take a break if you need to. Cause you know how this shit works... someone is gonna walk through the door and be just the person you are looking for.

Death Grips ft. Smurfco

The Bird Grips. This has so much potential.

In a more serious vein, I guess my suggestion was to reject the idea that 'action needs to be taken.' Nah, it doesn't. You need a musical experience that isn't frustrating; that's all. So, find / make one where you have more under your control.

Now that you've had some time to process things...

Yes, I can certainly understand your frustration...I know how hard you work on your music, I've seen it first-hand...you and Brad have developed a level of synchronicity that channels amazing creativity...I know I would be VERY intimidated trying to fit myself in to that...your level of skill and musicianship would intimidate much better players than me...

It would be a crime if you allowed this to shut you down...you and Brad have a lot more to contribute and I'm looking forward to hearing what you do next...if The Bird Index went the Beatles route and limited itself to making records and never played live again that would satisfy me, but I know the drive to play live is strong...

I fully support the idea of raiding another band a bassist or guitarist of sufficient skill to do your music justice...I'm quite sure there are numerous candidates in your area who are frustrated in their present situation, the chore for you is finding them...

I also think utilizing backing tracks, allowing you to move between guitar, keys, or bass as each performance dictates is a fine idea...this kind of performance is perfectly acceptable now, it may not have been in the past...

Stay with it, Charles...you have too much talent to let this low period deter you...

Unless you're writing the songs, playing originals is just playing covers you've never heard before--not a very appealing prospect. For a sustainable project, each member has to be getting something out of it.
