I am just about ready to throw in the musical towel

My drummer found our bass player/singer at an open mic playing covers by himself.

I put our cover band down years ago. Singer was mething around. Took a couple of years but “Dream Gravy” surfaced after years of not finding anyone that fit. I just kept jamming with my drummer off and on, working on original content, and the right dude showed up. +1 for talking to bassists/guitarists that you like from other bands.

You nailed it. I remember trying to find the right guitar player in a band, many years ago. We auditioned probably 10-15 guitarists and they were all really good players, but they were not what we needed.

Sorry to hear this. I know your frustration as I’m normally the only person who is prepared. I’m ashamed to admit, I’ve never listened too your stuff. I’m curious what the level of guitarist you require.

Btw, I’ve been told by an excellent source that your a very good bassist.
 
I feel your pain, Charles. I have tried several times to put a band together and have never had it work out. Most people want to play covers and get a lot of gigs.

I urge you to not give up, but to take some time to try to find the right person on either guitar or bass. A little time off looking for the right person is better than walking away from the music you love.

Thanks! The music isn't that technically challenging, I don't think, but the structures and chord progressions are usually more complicated than most rock bands and I think people have a hard time internalizing the structures of the songs.

Charts would help.
 
That sucks. I've liked the tracks I've heard from you. And there's no shame in being mainly a recording project rather than a live act.

It is kind of weird how so many of us have reasonably modest opinions of our own abilities, yet when we try to form bands with people we think of as equally skilled we find that they are disappointing and surprisingly untalented. Nearly every band I've tried to put together has been a failure because I am inevitably the only person with any ideas or depth of ability -- and I'm not even that good to begin with.

I made charts, he printed them and left them at home. I know he printed them because I saw them last time. But yesterday he was like, oops where are my charts. And I was like yes, where are your charts hummmm?

I sent him everything on Erased and got about halfway through charting Super Cuts...

This is true - there was one guy that showed up to audition for the guitar position and didn't bring a guitar.

"Where's your guitar?"
"Oh I thought for the first get together I would just see what you guys are about. I have an acoustic in my trunk though, should I get it?"
"Yes"
Dude comes back a few minutes later with a non-pickup acoustic so we have to point a shitty PA mic at it and we can't hear any of it.

Who doesn't bring a guitar to audition on guitar?

I keep a three ring binder of charts.

I’d tell him to go get his fucking charts unless he had everything memorized.
 
I figure I’ve been able to stay with my wife for over 40 years, and that’s pushing it far enough. Trying to put a band together would be one toke over the line...

Obviously, he’s an idiot for not bringing his gear. I get where he’s coming from though. If I were starting a band, now, I think getting along with the other members would be more important than the musicianship, to a certain degree. I don’t have a lot of free time these days, so if I am using it, I’m not going to jam with a bunch of assholes.
