I’ve definitely voiced opinions about Guitar Center… but mad props to new CEO Gabe Dalporto

I’m impressed. A Guitar Center CEO who not only has the balls to take face to face criticism on a popular podcast, but acknowledges what we’ve all seen and experienced in the stores, while having the right attitude to improve the experience. Not just numbers on a spreadsheet.

Respect. :baimun:

Interesting, and kudos to Gabe for doing the podcast and for the approach he's taking to Guitar Center. I mean, building a mock store at the company HQ to see what works? That's a ballsy move, but I bet it pays off...at least I hope it does.

I've watched a lot of Phillip's guitar reviews. He does a good job, IMO. He's got a whole slew of budget guitar reviews and they all follow the same format, which makes it easy to compare the results.

Honestly, I've been involved with enough big company meetings, earnings calls, and all that corporate homogenized babble.... the hands on approach and the fact that he is an active musician speaks volumes over the gobble-up-spit-out-lowest-common-denominator of earlier eras.

Because of SDotD, I've bought almost as much stuff from GC/MF as I have from Sweetwater in the past few months, so I honestly wish him well. :helper:

Do we work at the same company?

I used to be involved in a Fortune 500 company that gobbled up other companies and got so tired of hearing the same bullshit buzzwords used by executives who had zero fucking clue how anything actually works.... and then my own consulting firm where I dealt with companies of varying sizes and learning where to scale my vocabulary up and down... and now work for a mid-sized company that helps me fill my 401k for all the years I didn't pay myself very well. Now I hear variations of those same buzzwords and I'm just just the smirking old cop from the 80's action movies who just calls 'em out and says "Yeah yeah yeah... I got shit to do." :helper:

I just ordered an open box D'Angelico Excel DC Tour from MF yesterday. :bigg:

How long has he been on the job? This sounds like a lot of post-fall from grace ceo speak.

Blue--I've got enough black guitars.

I hear ya.... I went through a "natural wood" guitar phase, then too many blue guitars, too many black... and started to go down a pink and rainbow spiral. Now I'm just concentrating on the best sounding and playing guitars in my collection, and hoping that each one is a different color. :lmbo:

That was an impressive interview. No BS, no buzzwords, nothing about stakeholders. This guy understands that he has to serve the customers, which is great. Now if he could just get me a set of bass strings in less than a week. Or better yet, open a store that isn’t a 30 minute drive!

And of course, SDOTD has become awesome so I’m giving him credit for that.

McKnight should drink less coffee. And let his guests get a chance to speak. The GC CEO was impressive, but most of the time I was just 'Phil, will you please stop talking'.

This is the first time I've seen Phillip do an interview. What I've seen of his content is just him talking to the camera. It may be new territory for him, dunno. Being a good interviewer is a developed skill. It's not as easy as the good ones make it look. I found Phillip's twitching foot a bit distracting as well. I'm sure he was nervous doing the interview. Understandably so. But good for him to take advantage of the opportunity and make the most of it. It should help his channel.

Agree.

This is why I like Rick Beato. He knows how to ask great questions, then shut up and let the person answer.

I’m glad Guitar Center is still around. I’ve bought a lot of gear from them over the years. mostly used. Ironically, I’ve only ever bought 3 guitars from them, a new acoustic and 2 used electrics. But, I’ve bought a variety of other gear in store and online.
