Humbucker recommendations?

Hey, all

I'm looking to replace the stock humbuckers in my Epiphone Dot Studio (Gibson 335-type guitar). I don't want to pay more than about $60 or so each. I'm looking for more of a vintage humbucker sound than a modern super-hot sound. Thoughts?

Thanks

Grant

Honestly Grant, in that price range you're not going to find anything new that would be a vast improvement over the stock pickups in there now...you may be able to find some decent used PAF style pickups, though...choice depends on what you're looking for that you don't have now...

I've got nothing. I've mainly used single coils forever. I now have 2 guitars with humbuckers but they are both Curtis Novack pickups. They are over you price range, but they sound great. The neck humbucker he made for Torsten Kinsella almost made me want a neck pickup it sounds so good

Agreed. Increase your budget to $75 and get some Dimarzio PAFs.

Iron Gear Rolling Mill.

I got one in the bridge of my Trini Lopez build and it is insanely good. They have an overwound set as well.

Gotta get them sent from England though, but the set will only cost you about 70-80$ in the first place.

I put a pair of Seth Lovers in my Sheraton which sound soooo good. Based on your budget, get the used Duncans or spend a little more for the DiMarzio PAF's

If you are considering the Duncan '59 set I have heard that some people find them a touch harsh in the high end. An A2 magnet swap improved that, I have heard. I have no direct experience with them other than playing a Charvel that had one in the neck a few weeks ago. I thought it sounded pretty damn good. Take that for what it's worth.

Covered pickups would look odd on the Dot Studio. I'm thinking zebra. And maybe replacing the black tuners and tailpiece.

This isn't mine, but mine looks exactly like it. I've often thought about changing out the black hardware for chrome.

I see what you mean about not getting covered pups. I'm pretty sure I've seen black covers that would look killer on that guitar.
But if you're going to swap out all of the hardware you're going to spend a bit of coin for that....may as well just get the pickups you want.
Maybe black bobbins with black pole pieces for a fully blacked out look?
