Hoyer guitars?!?

So, this past Saturday i went to Elderly's to check out a used Emerald acoustic guitar they have for sale atm, as I am chatting with Alistair of Emerald guitars about getting a custom-made acoustic. (The used Emerald played fantastic, btw, but has a very chunky 'baseball bat' neck on it)

Anywho, when I went into the amp room (where there are more guitars too), they had a couple of Hoyer guitars hanging on the wall.

A white V:

...and a Washburn-looking singlecut guitar:

Anywho, I've never heard of Hoyer guitars before, and both played exceptionally well. They played as good as any of the EVH and PRS guitars I happened to grab and play.

Any one ever tried one? Both of those have Ebony boards...I didn't plug either of them in though, so no idea how the electronic/pickups are. But I thought they were a pretty good bang-for-the-buck :embarrassed:

I think that it's interesting to note that guitars around the $1K mark can be MIK and still generate a lot of interest. Several years ago these same guitars would bring out the MIK=crap contingent.

It's just a sign that people are reallizing that the 70's are over in regard to shitty Asian manufacturing.

With MIJ prices skyrocketing beyond reasonable levels, MIK is next for those "superbly crafted bargins" Keep an eye out!

I think that one thing we've gotten from 2011 so far (at least I have) is that decent instruments can be made anywhere as long as the materials are good and proper attention is paid to detail. A CNC machine in China is going to work the same as the same machine in Corona.

I agree. I know I am beating a dead horse, but I still can't believe the quality of the SX bass I bought a few moths ago for $100. Is it as good as a $1700 Musicman, hell no, but for a $100, it is killer. I may have to chance it with an SX guitar in a few moths. I mean for $100, worst case scenario, I book a gig and go all Pete Townshend on it.

I think that underlying message is that if you want to build a quality instrument, you can do it anywhere. If you want to build POS, you can do that anywhere too...you can slap a higher price tag on it if it's MIA though

MIC guitars have really exposed the build quality related to a price point concept more so than previously IMHO.

yeah. I've amazed myself by buying two Chinese made guitars this year. Neither is as "pro" as my Suhrs but the do the jobs I've bought them for and I could probably gig either one.

I have seven Korean guitars that I love, as everyone here knows. I also have one MIA guitar that I hate and sounds like roasted dog shit. Go figure.

Hoyer Guitars!

I agree that no nation has a lock on quality guitar building. I have some beautiful Korean instruments in my collection. It just depends on how much care and time the builder (or contracting distributor) wants to invest.
Hoyer guitars have been around for over a century. There is a brief history on their website and they are better known in Europe than they are in the US. They are currently made in Korea and Germany. I have a music store (open disclaimer) in Ludington, MI (about 3 hours from Battle Creek, Jbird, if you would like to try more Hoyers) with every one of the guitars displayed on the wall. I invite anyone to visit and compare the Hoyers to any other brand in the market. The pickups are excellent and all of the models have coil taps. Every instrument also has an ebony fingerboard, 24 3/4" scale length through neck with 22 frets, and a mahogany body. My favorite is the Ern but the White and Black Ladies seem to be the current overall favorites.

Well, if I had seen this earlier, I would have joined in extolling the virtues of said instruments. I own a Hoyer Deluxe Eagle and a Black Lady and can attest that they are the finest of guitars with amazing tone and quality build.
