As for the string issue, my guess is it uses Steinberger length double ball strings. They were readily available in 82.

Class of 82 here also. Another in that nearby time period with strange shaping was the Guild guitar that was cut out and like just the outline of a guitar.

^^ I remember Joe Perry rocking one of those Guilds in a rock video back in the 80's. I'm pretty sure it was in one of those RUN DMC projects, but it might have been something else.
