Dig it! HNGD - Another Squier Standard Strat

vintage clubber

You gunky!
Picked up this Squier Standard with the HH configuration off of CL specifically to test out the new GFS Gold Foils I picked up. Also upgraded the tremolo with a Wilkinson Vintage Steel Block and the tuners with vintage split posts.

Before:

Color is black metalflake...

Seller thought the pickups were GFS Professional Series "according to the person he bought the guitar from." No such luck when I pulled the pickguard - note the brass bass plates and no solder joints holding the covers on. In fact, the covers were only secured by two nuts on each of the "E" adjustable pole pieces... They were generic ceramic humbuckers, neck - 12K/bridge 14K...

After:

New Pickguard assembly:

New Tuners:

Reassembled:

I haven't had a chance to crank it up with the new set up yet though...:embarrassed:

Also interested to hear how it sounds. I didn't realize that Squiers suffered from "immense headstock syndrome" these days. Didn't they used to have normal strat headstocks?

Unlike a lot of folks here, my experience with GFS pickups (had a tele w/an alnico fatbody neck and a "lil puncher" rail bridge pickup, and they sounded GOOD! Problem was that the vintage neck and frets (7.5" radius, tiny frets) felt BAD!

Yeah, the Squier Affinity and Standard series strats have the big headstocks, as do the VM '70's Strats.

I have had very positive results with the majority of the GFS pickups I have used over the years.

That would work. Thanks. Will keep my eye peeled for one of those.
How about other similar priced strats, like Affinities, Yamahas, or Peaveys?
Anybody know how those are routed?

don't forget the HH Bullet Strats. I like the standards because they have a fully thick body and you can drop a better tremolo in them. The SE models are great for that too. I see those all the time on CL for under $100.
