Lunch: Hawaiian!

Punchy

Slacker Supreme
New Hawaiian-style place opened just up the street from my work (weird location, but I'm not gonna complain). Da Leila's Beach Hut. Burgers, sandwiches, and dogs, plus sides and shave ice. For my trial run, I got the Hawaiian Burger w/cheese and a side of pineapple coleslaw. The burger comes either beef or chicken, and it's all freshly made when you order.

Was da kine. Will definitely visit again :thu:

I love how the Hawaiian name on foods have been tarnished. It is like Hawaiian Pizza consists of cheese, pineapple and Canadian Bacon - where the Fuck is the Hawaiian in that? It sure ain't pineapple as that originally came from Brazil and Paraguay.....

On the other note, I hope that your lunch was good Punchy!

Yeah, I was hopin' for more of a mix plate menu, but around here I'll take what I can get. They don't even have real menus, yet, so no tellin' what's on all the burgers and such, but it's def modern hawaiian-style, not Hawaiian food. Not much market for poi stateside

And I'd say pineapple gets a pass. . I've walked some of those fields on Oahu and Maui

And don't forget a fried egg. A fried egg often tops your food. Like loco moco. Mmmmmmm

Yeah....I always look forward to making my annual visit home in August to eat poi. Used to be more abundant here in SoCal but many of those shops are gone. Marukai sometimes sells but only on certain days and I usually forget. Dang it - now I am craving poi.

It's funny how those days have passed for me as my summer job during high school was working in the warehouse area for the Del Monte Cannery (next to Dole). I had two GF's that there during the three summers that I worked there. One worked on the trimmer line and because of the exposure to constant pineapple, I couldn't eat that fruit anymore.

When I was stationed on Okinawa, they had pineapple plots/ fields around every single graveyard. I asked why once of a local, and mama-san told me that it was to keep the evil spirits and grave robbers away from their ancestors. Growing pineapples have very spiky and tough leaves... meaning that anything crossing through a field will probably get cut up pretty bad.

I like spam.

I hate Hawaiian Pizza.

But i think we have covered this one. :embarrassed:

As do I. I think that is why James May is my favorite Top Gear presenter. I would have taken Spam to the North Pole too...

He's my fave too. And i love that Polar one. I have it on DVD, and have seen it a bunch of times.

Have you seen any of the James May Drinks series? Theres an episode in the wine series, where he is challenged to cook a meal, and pair a wine to it. He cooks Spam and Beans, and picks a wine...and everyone said it was a good paring...

I saw a series where he and some wine snob cruised around, and the snob was sorta teaching him about wines, whilst traveling through France and such.

I don't recall the spam cooking in that one.
