Have you ever flown in a Helicopter?

Dudeman1967

blah, blah, blah...
Or any helicopter stories?

I was able to fly in a Huey back in high school. It was a military recruitment effort. They had a half dozen ships coming and going all day. It was over the Ozark hills for about a 20 minute round trip through valleys , just above a river or hill tops. He flew it like he was being shot at. Sitting with the side doors wide open and my feet hanging out of the door. It was one of the coolest experiences of my life.
Still had no interest in a military work but thanks for the ride!

A few years back my wife and I paid for a helicopter tour of the Florida keys. I was amazing to see everything from above. We flew over our hotel and along that bridge to Key West. Totally worth it. It was spooky to fly in what looks like a Chevy with a rotor.

The local medivac helicopter company does landing zone training every couple of years for our fire department. While they don't fly us, we do get up close and personal with the helicopters as they show us how patients are loaded and all the various ways things could go south and we could have a helicopter crash to deal with.

I am astounded how something no more substantial than aluminum beer cans can carry around three people and a patient.

fuck no, i'd never get on one of those things. i flew in someone's little cessna once and it scared the shit out of me. helicopters seem even less stable than that.

respect to anyone with the cojones to do it though, but it ain't me...

Not only less stable. If an airplane dies, there is a chance it can glide to a safe landing. Helicopters don't do that.

Twice. Once my wife and I did a tour of downtown SanAntonio.... it was weird to notice that the dome across the river from our Hotel had a giant daisy or sunflower painted on top.

The other time I was in St. Louis... and the couple in back were talking to their kid saying "See... nothing to worry about... no body is shooting at us" Then he explained that they were doctors and they adopted this kid from South America or South Africa (it was loud in the helicopter) where guerillas had shot up the village including this kid's family. They adopted him and were helping him learn that was not a normal event, that you can fly in a plane or helicopter without people shooting at you.

oh hell no. 86, Training for a red flag exercise in the middle of no where Wyoming. 6 of us were there training medical staff on weapons, and tactics while also being the enemy force they had to work around while rescuing the injured in simulated battle conditions. They had two huey’s coming and going for 3 days. Coming in fast, picking up then hauling ass. They told us hey, you fly around with the choppers whenever you want doing their practice runs. Oh hell know.

Then just after I got to the base in South Dakota in 87 one of them that fly security for nuclear weapons transport had something break lost control twirled down to the ground killing 7. Scare the shit out of me

Only once on a sight seeing trip in Kauai. One of the coolest experiences ever, certainly a bucket list thing. Top 2 reasons why:
1. We flew into a rainbow. I had no idea what would happen. The rainbow became a rainbow circle, it was incredible.
2. We flew into one of the canyons on the Na Pali coast. Looked at a waterfall. The pilot then turned the heli 90 degrees to show something else out the front window. Then he flew back out of the canyon sideways. I knew the chopper could do that conceptually but to actually be pointed forward and moving sideways

:omgcat:

I'd love to fly in one again

I went to The Sports Academy with the wife last Tuesday to attend a class on being Team Mom for my kid's Little League team. It was formerly known as Mamba Sports Academy. They changed the name and ownership after the owner, Kobe 'Bean' Bryant, died in a horrific helicopter crash on his way to Mamba Sports Academy. 7 people died in that crash. Twas a foggy morn.

I have yet to ride in a chopper myself. I don't plan on it.
I am half-Team Mom though.

I did a chopper tour of Chicago as part of some high-T bachelor weekend or something. It was a neat way to see a city I already knew pretty well, but I wouldn't seek it out.

Twice, both times in a 206 Jet Ranger. I interned at a local TV news station in high school and they took me up one afternoon. The next time was just a tourist ride with my girlfriend.
